finest of fuddlore
>GIs would bang an empty enbloc clip on their helmets to lure ze germans into thinking they are out of ammo and pick off easy targets

>all this under a cacophony of dozens of guns firing in both directions, mortar fire, heavy ass and possibly planes overhead

It's not that loud, you can easily hear the dude around the corner reloading. Have you not played any of the early 2000s Medal of Honor games?

>It's not that loud, you can easily hear the dude around the corner reloading
shitpost aside, some dudes on youtube decided to try that and yeah, in close range even with guns shooting you still have a chance of someone earing your gun going ping but it's a very small chance.
so either it was some made up bullshit by a fudd or maybe someone on the front decided to try it and got real lucky one retard with good ears fell for it.

I don't know if this can even be called fuddlore because it's just severe brain damage, but in the 2000s I had some guy genuinely try to convince me troops in Vietnam would carry a belt for the M60 because it was 7.62 ammo and that allowed them to pick up Vietnamese AKs and use that ammo.

It's not even fuddlore at that point it's just plain ignorance.

Do people really think that guns are firing and planes are flying 24-7 with no breaks in the fire?

its basically an evolution of the garand ping myth
the original one is that the ping got soldiers killed because germans would know that the GIs were reloading
the tapping the helmet would have had to come after the ping myth was already widespread, since it relies on already assuming the germans were conditioned to exploit the ping

its basically what happens when you choose to argue entirely using logic and rationalization without actually using primary accounts
a lot of fuddlore probably started out this way

according to german accounts, they were never able to actually exploit the garand ping in combat
mostly because, as everyone mentioned, the battlefield is simply too noisy to hear somethin as subtle as a metallic ping when guns are going off next to you
but the germans also said it wouldnt even matter if they could hear it or not, because the other GIs had guns too and would be ready to cover for a reloading squad member
and the BAR was mag fed, and there was no way they could ever be sure if he was relaoding

if its a quiet moment with no fighting, then you will be able to reload in peace without anyone bothering you

And how would the Germans know how the Garand worked to be able to act on a specific noise during a fire fight?
Anonymous No.64443251 [Report]

If you're reloading your gun in close proximity with the enemy in a situation where the ping would be relevant, then there has very recently been guns firing, and since fighting is done in platoons, its very likely that guns around you are still firing.

the germans could have plausibly known about the ping, they had fought the US since north africa and captured several garands, though this is mostly just speculation if they ever thought the ping mattered beyond just being a funny quirk of the gun

german accounts rarely, if ever, mention hearing the ping in combat so it is almost certain that the ping had no tangible effect on combat or ever produced any kind of specific action to counter it or take advantage of it

My grandad was a muh-reen in the pacific. He told me the Reising smgs compensator pushed the barrel up to aid in shooting at planes.

My old boss would tell everyone that he was a "green beret army ranger sniper" in Iraq. He would tell everyone that 5.56 is really short hand for .50 BMG. Also thats why just getting grazed by a 5.56 is enough to liquify your insides. He also told people that a .22 round is the most dangerous round ever made due to it's habit of bouncing around inside the body. He got fired for being a idiot. Thank God

Maybe, maybe, in a crazy close range situation, fighting for a house or street in ww2, could a nazi or zip hear the ping. But even then, you're seriously gonna hop out of cover against like 5+ Americans who don't have an empty clip? It's laughable fuddlore imo

I'm unsure of where you can watch Restrepo now, and I don't remember if its part 1 or 2, two being called Korengal I believe. Somewhere in there, Jones (image related from my previous post) made this assertion.
I mean, I guess? He didn't say that, and I doubt their M2s or Barret 50s were loaded with HE rounds. Maybe I'm the fool here but again, that's not how it was presented in the film

i was disappointed the first time i ever shot a garand i could barely hear the ping myself
