Who said anything about a fortified bunker? This is just an ordinary ICF home with the concrete core bumped up to 10" for increased thermal mass and sound insulation.

If you're particularly paranoid, project manage the build yourself to ensure there's no contact between the guys doing the concrete pour and the contractors installing the reinforced doors or whatever other schizo additions you choose.

Pure speculation on my part here, and I'm only addressing the OP pic.
To me it looks like a settlement hard point; not a place to garrison troops. It's where you go to when you run away from the raiders. The bad guys get your cows and sheep and whatever material goods you left behind in your house they want to take. But you keep your women and children and your life because you are inside a location that's too much of a bother to penetrate.

You gotta remember that most keeps like this were never meant to stop armies of kings leading tens of thousands of troops , but to make keep you, a minor noble, your immediate family, frirnds and few houseservants safe from a sudden attack by a roving bad of dozen brigants who stalk the woods.
For that purpose, it's more than enough

There's actually very few companies building decent homes in America. Theyre usually companies offering flood/forest fire survival as a selling point so your house would just be one of many. Some also specialize in defensive structures but that's usually super high end homes and those in third world countries.

Regardless, the local wetbacks aren't going to be involved in the build and the people that DO know are successful in their field and would have dozens of homes to choose from.

You also probably can't afford it anyway.

I've posted these a couple times before. A distant relative received them from the Hapsbergs when she married a half-brother of Franz Ferdinand (which resulted in him getting kicked out of the family for marrying a commoner). aside from their use as a point of shelter in case or a raid or a hostile army passing by that other annons have already pointed out.
they are first and foremost a social thing, a declaration of status. to those under you it is a very real set in stone way of showing you are better than them, you are richer than them and that they can't do shit against you because once you close your gate they aren't getting in. to your peers having a castle of any sort means you are in the club. sure you might be a bottom feeder compared to the big guys but at least you are in the same club as them.
militarily you can in a pinch squeeze in half a dozen horses and two dozen men at arms.
that means that you can harass forage parties intercept communications ect. you can be annoying
an invader now has to chose how it's going to deal with that annoyance.
you can ignore it and accept that you are going to lose some smaller forage parties
you can send a detachment of men to put it under siege just to bottle them up
you can try to offer them terms or to bribe them
you can try and take the castle
ect. ect.
all of those cost you something, men, resources, attention, time, money
and along your route of march to where you want to go because it is important there will be half a dozen or more of these. once you get where you want to go there will be half a dozen around that to that you are going to have to deal with
everyone of them requiring a decision and imposing a cost
it's guerrilla tactics avant la lettre

>tfw you will never have a cozy keep

my family owns a small castle in southern Germany
it's basically a ruin with like 10 usable rooms
a restored barn is rented out to a cafe/restaurant

but the fucking upkeep
you have mandatory! restorations by law
my dad basically spends all his vacation time (and probably all his money) on this

as kids it was awesome
but now
there's always something breaking
and you need to replace broken things with "period accurate" crafted replicas

like
one day one of the main doors of the great hall break
and you wonder, how much can fucking hinges cost
until a specialized blacksmith quotes you 7000€ for 6 small metal pieces

Big castles were like Green Zones and FOBs. Little castles were like fire bases or OP/LPs.
A hardened manor would have been for a baronet and his squad of commoner knights to watch a border, important road, or productive farms/mills/whatever, and to store things taken in tax before sending it up the chain to a more important noble in a bigger castle. It would have protected them from being murdered in their sleep by thieves, angry peasants, enemy raiders, or that asshole over the hill in his own manor who keeps trying to rustle your cattle when he thinks nobody will notice.

The English had a habit of tossing around knighthoods to anyone that could fight well. See Sir John Hawkwood, whose father was a tanner and who was apprenticed to a tailor before signing up to fight in the Black Prince's army, where he was knighted and later became a mercenary captain in the Italian Wars.

On the other hand, the French were very set on knighthood being solely a matter of nobility. In the rest of Europe so far as I can tell, they didn't go around handing out knighthoods to commoners, but if you could afford to hire and train and equip a few dozen men and called yourself a knight, no one would challenge it.

Draining the lake could involve actual civil engineering depending on the topography. That could take months if the inhabitants interfere.

They actually had a good idea of how to do construction, they just didn't have the money. Scandinavia is DAMN cold and that shortens the growing season, making labor more expensive. The Norse made due with what little they had but when they had the freedom to build they made these Norman Keeps. Still minimalist but very well made.

>All those woods will get in the way of cannon fire and trebuchet accuracy sucked when we had people experienced with the thing.
The woods would provide the attacking force with perfect cover and an ample supply of building material. This one of the reasons why castles weren't surrounded by woods when they were still being actively used. And the accuracy of trebuchets and early cannon is good enough to hit a castle.
>Draining the lake could involve actual civil engineering depending on the topography.
A few weeks ago I came across a siege where the attackers redirected an entire river to create a dry approach to a castle. The oxbow lake that resulted out of this still exists to this day. And the siege didn't last that long too - but for the life of me I can't find this example again.

Archaeological finds suggest Scandinavians as far north as central Norway had travelled south to serve as Auxiliaries in the Roman armies as early as the 300's. They would save up their pay, bringing home roman coins, loot and other stuff they gathered while on campaign and bring them back once their service was over.

This means a lot of them would have learned how to construct Roman style marching camps, I wonder if that inspired the proliferation of wood and earth hill forts.

The Trebuchet was good enough to hit a castle when you had all day to throw stones at it and an experienced crew to work them. The cannon would need to be within rifle range to hit the castle.
>Lake
That was a river, this is a lake. Rivers naturally drain while lakes that drain quickly don't stay lakes.

Trebuchets and cannons were laid down and operated by trained professionals. So if one can afford to field them, the operation is included.
>The cannon would need to be within rifle range to hit the castle.
And? What are trenches, gabbions, sandbacks etc.?
>Rivers naturally drain while lakes that drain quickly don't stay lakes.
Rivers also have a stronger current than lakes and you don't need to drain and fill in the whole lake.
And ultimately - it is the mcmansion of some polish richfag so it won't stand up to any kind of organised siege.

you'd just throw in faggots of brush wood and reeds and then cover it with dirt or planks

This works against you, actually. With a river you just need to dig a channel and divert the river into it. With a lake you need to divert every river feeding into the lake as well as dig a channel to drain the lake it'self
>And ultimately - it is the mcmansion of some polish richfag so it won't stand up to any kind of organised siege.
They could have hired mercenaries and the fact that we aren't walking through the front door suggest they did.

Dig another channel out of the lake and start throwing stuff into the water to construct approaches to the caste. The other Anon is right: Alexander the Great constructed an approach to the island of Tyre to capture it. And nowadays it became a peninsula, as sediment was cought on Alexanders causeway.
>They could have hired mercenaries and the fact that we aren't walking through the front door suggest they did.

Only if the besieging army has both good supply lines and no threat of reinforcements. At the small scale the besiegers are at just as much risk of running out of food simply because there's a limit to how much they can carry. On the large scale the castle will ask for reinforcements from nearby friends and mercenaries. Small groups can hit the besieger's supply line while large groups could threaten to destroy the siege piecemeal.

money? hard to say, depends on the region, time period, location of construction and desperation level of the local ruler/lord (peasants will just for free if you threaten to kill them/threaten them with eternal damnation don't tell anyone)

time?
from initial construction to working fortress, about 3-10 years generally, the castle in that image is barely even a castle because it doesn't even have an outer wall or courtyard, it's just a keep, i'd say that it'd probably take 3-4 at most to build (provided a steady cash supply keeps flowing and weather doesn't get in the way of construction, and provided bandits don't raid your area and ransack the local villages helping to construct it.
keep in mind that castles are rarely ever "done" and many castles stay in construction for millenia if not centuries as it expands, gets repairs, or incorporates new defensive innovations of the time.
