MRE thread?

I just ate the creamy fettucine alfredo and it wasn't awful. From the way people talked about it, I thought it would be worse, instead it was just kind of bland and inoffensive. My bigger point of contention is those shitty wheat, white, and multigrain snackbreads they put in, does anyone like those? Give me the crackers any day, you can crumble them up and put them in the main too.

Good for you OP. Spinach feta is broadly the least desirable in my experience. I always avoided them, but found a bit of salt goes a long way in them. My first platoon commander would always draw his MREs last like a good leader should, and almost always got stiffed with spinach feta. Madman. As far as the snack breads, Those were things I'd stuff in my cargo pocket and have on a patrol, I also liked the tootsie rolls for that same reason.

Cold weather MREs are great, but yeah boiling water is a huge pain in the ass. Even in a cold mountain environment where you had no option but to do it, there is a lot of lost time and resources boiling it. On one op I had maybe two mains in a whole week and subsisted off the snacks because the only way to get water up there was by boiling it, very time consuming and you don't get a whole lot of water for the volume of snow you boil.

Chicken chunks to me is the worst but still edible. I'd definitely trade it though. I've never had a lemon pepper tuna which I hear is the worst because every case B I've ever bought has had the tuna swapped out for the chicken chunks. I'm guessing there was a tuna shortage in the early 2020s?

I agree They aren't bad but they aren't great either. You know what they are? They are the exact same bits of chicken you would find in can of Campbells chicken noodle soup, in fact I added them to that this very week. But on their own they are just slimy and nothing, and a cheese pack and a tortilla aren't enough to make up for that. If they were in some kind of noodle and chicken soup MRE, they'd be great.

I finally bought one of those A/B menu double boxes off Amazon and have been working through them. They mostly range from decent to actually really damn good, with Chili Mac, Beef Taco Filling, and Chicken & Noodles with vegetables being the best mains so far. The only outright bad one so far has been the Pepperoni Pizza slice. I'm dreading the cheese pizza one. They just can't get bread right in these things; the italian breadsticks and cinnamon bun sides were also pretty bad. The tortillas are...edible if you're starving, but much less welcome to see than the crackers, especially the vegetable crackers.

They've got that pound cake down to absolute SCIENCE though--delicious every time.

Expired isn't a thing. They have theoretical shelf lives based on storage temperature and age, they have stickers to help you gauge that. Pre covid you could reasonably pay $100 for a case that's inspection date was a few years before purchase. I have eaten 10 year old ones that were okay, I've eaten them when the sticker indicator has said they are too old and they were fine. I have gotten a few cases at around $30, most had fresh stickers, one was a little darker, one was darker than the control rig. That was the one I ate that was fine.

Are these much worse than the regular MREs? I remember as a kid eating MREs and they were good, but these are pretty atrocious. Am I remembering wrong or are these totally different than the entree in the MREs

Cold weather mains? They're just single serve mountain house meals, are freeze dried and are quite different from regular MREs. Very tasty. I like southwest breakfast skillet and the clam chowder ones a lot.

Yeah I don't drink because I have insomnia and it sucks my sleep up every time. I have high cholesterol and work in a school with a turbonigger boss. The staff treated me like I was detoxing even tho my ald was normal because I mentioned drinking a few beers that weekend. Can karoshi tier stress, shitty mre diet, and no exercise pop your pancreas?

Those are different than the ones you remember and the regular ones available now. Standard ones aren't dehydrated and really are "ready to eat"

I'd have a bunch if they weren't hard to find.
Where'd you get that one anon?>>64447055
The Mexican ones are the best menus IMO.
It's kind of hard to fuck up most of the meals, plus the spices disguise the company taste decently enough.
The goulash one is the worst offender for that, I take my first bite and think "ah yes, tastes like sopacko."

I had a very hard time with my first jalapeno beef, only menu I had an actual stomach reaction to.
Next one went great, however, now it's one of my favorites.
I think my mistake was eating the mayonnaise with that one instead of throwing it in the trash immediately.
The pizza ones are definitely off-putting, but I can hork them down.
Pepperoni is marginally better than plain.

are MREs good if im underweight and want a simple + calorie dense meal while im at college? i'm kinda autistic about texture stuff and the more plain the better. i dont intend on eating them every day, maybe just 2-3 times a week.

Texture is a bit rough, but taste isn't nearly as bad as you'd think anon!
Give it a shot, it's no zapplesauce but not the worst thing I've eaten out of a bag.

I actually really fucking like these things.
Put half the pack in and see how you feel about it at first.
I assumed it'd be weak bullshit the first time I encountered it and just dumped the whole thing in, but it was actually hot enough that it overpowered the taste and kind of made it less tasty IMO.

Hormel ready meals and dehydrated mashed potatoes may be better for you if you're picky, you can buy specifically what you like rather than only eating 30% of a case of mres.

Had a cozy MRE picnic today. Introduced a friend of mine who likes wearing Flecktarn to MREs (specifically Chili Mac) and now he loves them.

Have you never had it? It's bad. Like worse than HDR bad. I'd say it rivals the vomlet but I haven't had it yet to say definitively. I haven't met a single vet that has anything positive to say about the pizza. Yes it is a major breakthrough in food storage technology, it's a modern marvel frankly. However it just plain sucks
