If you don't hunt/have access to a clay range a ghetto blaster is better than a shotgun. you will have an easier time mounting a cheapo red dot and you'll have more fun shooting it if you can only shoot at static targets. obviously basically any other PCC or better yet an actual AR is better. Shotguns are only good if you hunt, enjoy shooting clays or you literally cannot get anything else due to money or local laws.
I think the only advantage a shotgun would have is a legal one both in terms of obtaining and because you're more likely to end a hd situation in 1 or 2 shots which in theory would look better than a mag dump but idk how much that would actually matter. if you are shooting a static target 9mm is way more fun than slugs or shot

this is why I rely on a shotgun for hd and my reasons would be that I live in commiefornia so I own AR's but they're not suitable for hd due to laws and this state hates handguns plus I live in a condo so I'm relying on a shotgun with good buckshot

I also unfortunately live in CA and mainly got a Mossberg 590A1 for home defense/hunting but mostly because I refuse to buy one of the cucked ARs that we have

The advantage of a shotgun is how much energy transfer potential you have per trigger pull. Assuming all pellets connect, which at HD ranges they normally do, you have a ton of lead hitting the target and unlike most rifle calibers you aren't going to be wasting energy with too many of those pellets successfully passing through. It isn't particularly difficult to get an affordable pump action with 4-7 follow up shots on tap if the first doesn't do the job and if the target is still standing after eating 45-90+ pellets of 00 buckshot or ~135 pellets of #4 buck then you are probably screwed because you must be shooting at T-1000 or something like that.

The advantage of owning a PCC that I can think of is if your only local indoor range doesn't allow rifles or shotguns. That was more of less the case where I lived years ago, with every remaining outdoor public range or public land being several hours away due to all the sprawl. But this is a very situational advantage.

As far as legal regulation, if it's a shitty urbanized state most PCCs like the Hi-Point also count as assault weapons due to their vertical grip and threaded barrels. They are sold in California with fin grips which are really horrible to use. The Ruger PC is much better and it is CA legal, but significantly more expensive.

Just get an AR. A featureless AR is 95% as good as a regular AR, and only takes 5 minutes to uncuck.

Use a low flash brake like the SI Jcomp. Linear comp if you mostly shoot at indoor ranges.

Use an actual fixed stock or just "pin" a collapsing stock. Many ways to do it, but I prefer to use a Magpul stock and remove the adjustment crosspin. The adjustment lever will no longer work. When you need to adjust the stock, insert a nail into the hole and use the lever like normal

Split apart your upper and lower if you're doing it in public. Take out the nail when you're done, and it's back to being a fixed stock.
