10mm has been on the shelf of every gun store I've been to for the last 30 years but I wouldn't call it common.

Selection is often limited to one brand and it's always ovepriced.

it's true that trigger discipline is a fairly recent invention, yes.

you probably don't have the beligerant self-preservation instinct of everyone early gen-x and before, so you should continue to practice trigger discipline.

10mm mp5s used to have straight magazines. what's interesting is that the sas teams that went into the iranian embassy carried mp5s with straight magazines. could have something to do with it.

You're confusing causation and correlation. If you are an elite shooter/firearms practitioner, you don't need to worry about trigger discpling. The only people who use 10mm are elite practitioners. Elgo, 10mm shooters often don't bother with trigger discipling.

The FBI chose to adopt 10mm as their new cartridge in the late 80's. It didn't last long because their interest led to .40 S&W being announced basically as soon as they adopted 10mm, the guns they bought having some issues and both 9mm and .40 being much more sensible options in the end. Rainbow Six probably chose them because the FBI HRT had bought the 10mm MP5 variant and liked them a lot, and have supposedly been quite precious about them since they went out of production.
Plus if your game is already going to feature the MP5, which it is if you're making a counter-terrorism themed tactical shooter around Y2K, it's basically a freebie to add the 10mm variant.
In Fallout's case, the cartridge was specifically chosen to be a common round because one of the devs saw it as good alt timeline fodder, something that exists in the real world but never quite seemed to take off like it could've.

>the guns they bought having some issues
Bingo, if the Bren Ten, Colt Delta Elite, and S&W 1006 series guns weren't manufactured with so many problems, then the round might've taken off. However, every LE organization that gave 10mm a try after the FBI hated the guns it was chambered in.

Anonymous No.64465742 [Report]
>>64459745
>for some reason
Because it was badass. Also probably because it was the latest greatest thing. I've always liked the look with the straight poly magazine myself and afaik it's also the only MP5 to ever have a bolt hold open like an AR, something I think should've been added to the whole line at least as an option.

Also I think the /10 appeared in the games as well as the novel, and may have been the default weapon for the characters from the novel like Ding. It's been an extremely long time since I played the original R6 though so I could be mixing stuff up.

10mm failed commercially because of Colt and their militant fudd loyalists insisting on shoehorning the cartridge into a frail and fragile borderline antique pistol, originally designed for a cartridge explicitly intended to mirror the performance and pressures of a black powder revolver from the civil war era.

Has it not occured to you that there are multiple different people here.
>It failed because it wasn't REAL 10mm
I haven't said this, there are good 10mm loads out there.
>It failed because they weren't REAL shooters
I haven't said this in this thread, but yes, users can be weak. It's the same reason many revolver buyers will get a .357 Magnum handgun and only shoot .38 SPL out of it.
>It failed because they weren't REAL 10mm handguns
Plenty of bad handgun designs have influenced the market. One of the reasons that 9mm took longer to get popular in the US was that the Browning Hi-Power couldn't take the hot loads that the Luger, Walther, and MP-40 could take without falling apart, so everyone here in the US thought it was a super anemic round.

>Colt and their militant fudd loyalists insisting on shoehorning the cartridge into a frail and fragile borderline antique pistol
The first production 10mm guns were the Bren Ten (CZ-75 clone), not the Colt Delta Elite. The "antique pistol" had fewer problems than the new design.

It never failed. 10mm is simply niche, and misunderstood. It's niche is full-size autoloaders, which have gone out of favor. But even in that realm it has to compete with 5.7, 9, 45, 460, ect.

It's misunderstood because the majority of people think that the only appeal is the full power loads, which are both expensive and uncommon. The actual appeal to the cartridge is VERSATILITY. Just like 357/38 Special and 44 mag/44 special, you don't have to shoot the full power loads. You simply have the option. Also even the "weak" stuff(range loads are consistently slightly hotter than the comparable. 40 load, look it up nigger, god I hate that rumor)tends to shoot pretty nice due to the guns being a fullsize more often than not.

And most guns can straight up shoot .40 without a conversion barrel.

It's a good round. Unfortunately the fullsize autoloader niche is so small that anyone even bothering out of curiosity gets something more interesting.

NTA, but .40 S&W would be more popular if it wasn't rapidly destroying most of the guns it came in. Most people see a gun. chambered to fire a specific round and expect it to be built to last that round.

Makes sense, assuming HK didn't half-arse the conversion it should just be a famously reliable, easy to handle and all around nice SMG in a cartridge with significantly more power behind it when you need to put someone down.
I'm curious how the .40 model compared.

10mm being popular in their alt history timeline is an even weirder choice seeing as Fallout is 50s Retro Futuristic with googie styling. 45acp would be the obvious choice for most popular round, but I don’t think any of the Fallout development team have ever been in the same room as a gun before. For example, the 45 ammo in Fallout 4 is used in the submachine gun, the pipe revolver, and the combat rifle, conflating 45acp, 45Colt, and… 45-70? The handmade from rusty scrap pipe revolver can also be chambered for .308 Winchester and the bolt action hunting rifle can be chambered for .38 special, which are possible things one could do I guess.

>.38 special bolt action
Actually not that stupid of an idea if you suppress it and use one of the really heavy 170grain ish loads. Would be tiny because anything more than an 8” barrel is pointless and it would be super quiet (as far as guns go).

>seeing as Fallout is 50s Retro Futuristic with googie styling
The earlier games [including 3/NV] had a wider combination of 'retro' styles including art deco. Bethesda didn't go full retard with LE EPIC 50'S cartoon art style until after their previous lead artist died [the guy that did the art for 3]. The isometric games had a lot of influence from 80's/90's action movies so they included shit that they thought would be cool and futuristic, like the G11, Jackhammer, 10mm, etc.

On the subject of .38 in Fo4, my headcanon has always been that it's actually .38 Super. Maybe the US at some point had a law like Mexico where military cartridges were banned for civilians, or the US's isolationism meant that the domestic .38 Super took the niche that the European 9mm has IRL. It'd explain why it's mostly used in autoloaders ingame, and if you look at the cartridge model it actually is a rimless cartridge that doesn't resemble .38 Special.
