If you want one for the history and all that, sure, they're fun and cool. If you want one for practical reasons, it's mostly very inferior to a lightweight AR15, if you wanted a semi-auto rifle with a wooden rifle stock like that, the Mini-14 is also a lot better in everything but sheer weight.
You could get by with an old M1 Carbine if you really wanted to, but ammo isn't cheap anymore, you don't have a lot of options for it, and the magazines fucking SUCK. I'd advise to treat them as the historical relics they are.

Strutting an old one can be a cheaper way, yeah. Also maybe re-bed the stock if needed.
