They’re amazing guns when they work but the ammo is getting increasingly expensive, most original guns are getting a bit clapped out and overpriced, and any and all reproductions are totally ass and not worth the materials they’re made out of.

That being said if you can find one and get some magazines that actually work, you’ll have a blast shooting it.

I miss my carbine every damn day. They point so well and they’re really accurate. I could hit standing 200 yard shots extremely easily. Probably my favorite pattern of rifle.

Yup, we missed out. The M1 carbine was the AR of the 60s until maybe even the 90s. Ammo was available, cheap and the guns weren't hitting collector status yet. Shame
I don't think ARs are near as enjoyable to shoot though. They're concussive, beat up steel and for whatever reason, don't feel as handy.

The Mini-14 is strictly better if you just want a garand action gun in general. Get a used one and put an Accu-Strut on it and it'll cost less, shoot cheaper ammo and group better, with far better aftermarket support.

Same. My uncle gave me an M1 carbine a while back and it’s crazy how good it is. I can stand shoot my carbine at 200 yards reliably while my scoped AR with a bipod shooting sitting is iffy.

If you want one for the history and all that, sure, they're fun and cool. If you want one for practical reasons, it's mostly very inferior to a lightweight AR15, if you wanted a semi-auto rifle with a wooden rifle stock like that, the Mini-14 is also a lot better in everything but sheer weight.

You could get by with an old M1 Carbine if you really wanted to, but ammo isn't cheap anymore, you don't have a lot of options for it, and the magazines fucking SUCK. I'd advise to treat them as the historical relics they are.

It's a super handy and ergonomic rifle. Light recoil, accurate and enjoyable to shoot.

There is no practical reason to get it as a primary firearm these days. But if you want it, get it, you won't regret it. For occasional visits to the shooting range with something interesting/not so common 10/10.

I can't help but like them, but I've always had bad experiences with them. I've owned 3 USGI M1 carbines now, an IBM, an NPM and most recently an Underwood. All have been very unreliable, even with USGI magazines, deep cleans and changing the springs. I sold my last one, the Underwood and don't plan on getting another any time soon. Its not that they're the worst guns I ever shot, I just can't seem to chase the greebles out of them that make them unreliable.

I mean, if you're getting an actual, quality piece with zero round count and it's as good as the original ones, I'm interested for sure.
You'd honestly be a fool to hold straight USD cash outright at the moment, we're in for another ~10% devaluation before the end of the year, and next year looks relatively grim as well.
Sink your Benjamins into assets, buying a quality M1 for investment purposes isn't the worst place to park your income.

By every practical metric, absolutely not.

They are far too expensive, temperamental, magazines are garbage and ammunition cost is extortionate.

If you already have an AR and you have the money/time/patience to troubleshoot an M1 carbine and feed it then sure. They are very fun when they work. But a $400 poverty AR will still run circles around it in terms of practical capabilities.

What you should absolutely not do is buy an M1 Carbine instead of something in 5.56 just to be unique and special. You'll regret that decision immensely.

And that's fine, but there are tons of rifles other than an AR that aren't as painful to own and operate as an M1 Carbine. Even a Mini-14 is a vast improvement because the factory magazines are reliable and it fires 5.56mm which is both more capable and affordable.

Or get a battle rifle.
Or an M1 Garand.
Or a PCC.
Or heck almost anything else. Just don't hurt yourself needlessly by having an M1 carbine in 2025 as your primary tactical/do everything rifle. A secondary fun gun sure, but it just doesn't do anything other than that well enough to be worth considering.

I inherited a nice one from WW2, it's super fun to shoot and its got tons of charm but yeah anons itt are correct, unless you want to be a collector for whatever reason they're very expensive for what they do. Compare the price of one and what you can do with an AR build of the same price.

Other anons are right. They're not worth it. However...
after WWII you could get a lot of cool guns for cheap. M1 carbines and all the ammo you could shoot were being sold for a bucket of air. The m1 carbine was a helluva deal before electricity.
