theoretically you shouldn't grip the magazine because the interface between the magazine lips and the gun is actually quiet sensitive, if you push the magazine around the rifle may not feed reliably.
The reason for the handguard possition is 1,2,3,4,5 point supported shooting. hitting what you aim at is very important, so you take as many contact points as you possibly can. So if you can ram the side of the gun up against the corner of a wall, you totally do that, it's like a free tripod. but you can't allow anything to interfere with the action of the rifle, so the contact point is further down the barrel.
imagine you are shooting from a window, you want to ram than bitch onto the window sill for that extra point of contact. but you still need to move the rifle so how far forwards do you want to rest it? too far forwards and you can't rotate, too far back and you can't change magazine. you use the posstion in pic relate because you can still drop the bottom of your hand onto a surface to stabilize yourself.
A 5 point shoot for reference, is shoulder, off hand trigger/grip, forward elbow, foward hand, brace point. It's how you shoot when lying on your back, splayed around something like a palm tree. you're basically in full over with that bitch straight angled at a target. it's a plinking possition
