Vietnam builds artificial islands
Barque Canada Reef is one of the reefs of the Spratly islands and is considered to be one of the biggest artificial islands that Vietnam has reclaimed.

This island is also claimed by the China, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Taiwan.

Characteristic of the island:
> ~500 acres (~2 km^2)
> ~3200m runway
> Harbors/ports
> Munition storage
> Defensive trenches
> ~$11 billion (speculative)

Anyways, do you think this a good military development/strategy or is it just a waste of money and resources?

It's twice as close to Vietnam than it is to China so as long as the Flips are fine about it I don't see any issues

No, but building them on coral reefs means you don't have to bring in all the material needed to reach the ocean floor.

Also, the island seems to still be under construction as you can see thin sand lines from the top and bottom of the island.

That's a very old picture. It's already done now. I don't know about the chink, but for vietnam they typically have some token civilian housing on these artificial islands to 'legitimize' them. See the tiny row of 7 houses to the right of the hangar, bottom left

I think this has to due to Vietnam expanding its Gray Zone Tactic, which is basically like fighting without using weapons but by interpreting and blending the laws.

> tiny row of 7 houses to the right of the hangar
Yeah, this feeds to my previous point. These islands are multi-purpose and are probably used for both civilian and military uses. This makes sense as Vietnam is between the point of East Asia and Southeast Asia. They're probably trying to monopolize or keep the stability of this canal.

The Philippines is also in the same area as Vietnam, but not much is happening.

It also makes me kinda doubt if this development is worth it. Just one of these islands is practically the price of an aircraft carrier or a couple of destroyers.

Don't Typhoons usually spawn or tear through the area of the Spratly islands?

This sounds really expensive to manage, unless the buildings are extremely Typhoon proof along with everything else

I kind of wonder how the plumping is on those islands. They'll likely have some type of water distillation system to use the surrounding salty water.

Internet can be covered by Satellite WiFi.

Food and other supplies is delivered on a schedule from the mainland and storages somewhere.

I'm not sure about the medical or firefighting situation

Mmmm I don't think the Vietnamese (or Chinese) are that stupid. They definitely have a plan for when these things get attacked.

I imagine that these islands are like tanks. The opponent has to deal with them before they become too big of a problem, so they'll draw the aggro which makes the point of attack more predictable.

They'll probably use the islands closer to the mainland as logistic and supply hubs and they'll be much more heavily defended than the outer islands. If the supply lines get cut off, the islands can survive on their own until reinforcements arrives.

If reinforcements arrives, the opponents are going to be sandwiched between and again, this feeds into my original point of the islands being a huge problem.

They're honestly a nightmare to deal with and you'll certainly need to nuke or bomb them heavily during the initial invasion phase.

Might makes right

They don't see Southeast Asia as countries but rather as vassals who should accede to them

Everyone else but the Philippines have been building up their islands since the late 90s to 2000s with Vietnam occupying the most islets

It's hard to build up islands now that the Chinese coast guard and PLAN have defacto control of the area but Vietnam, Malaysia and even Indonesia had the foresight of long term planning and building up runways and ports that blocking them at sea would be tantamount to declaring war

Meanwhile the Philippines banked too hard on being America's dog they didn't develop their islands and are close to lose control of these islets over time and have no access to theirs without being shadowed and shat on by the CCG and PLAN

They can buy 10,000 Brahmos and 10,000 Harpoons and they'll still never retake those islands back

>Meanwhile the Philippines banked too hard on being America's dog
They kicked America out of their country in the 90s and then had to beg them to come back and build up bases again since 2020. They wouldnt be having any of these problems if they just let America stay in the first place

They used to have Myanmar until they turned on the junta and started supporting breakaway rebel states in Shan and Rakhine.

Cambodia as well, although after the lack of support in the last war against Thailand where China clearly chose to preserve its relationship with the more powerful and economically important country over the one that they actually have bases in, I'd be reevaluating my options if I were a Chinese "ally" in South East Asia

> the second a war with china pops off all those island bases will be showered with cruise missiles.
I think that's actually the purpose of the island. It just like the nuclear silo sites in Dakota, it's meant to draw the aggro of the opponent like a tank.

If Vietnam does deploy defense systems, which I think they will do so, it'll make the islands much more tougher to deal with. Attacks will be limited to certain assets such as destroyers or long range aircraft's, as anything less would likely get taken out honestly. An amphibious assault is the toughest maneuver to pull off and will just result in major casualties.

If one island gets attacked, they'll all respond and communicate to the mainland for backup.
