Why cant they just shoot them and be done with it?

Because being too poor for vehicles suck, you start thinking of the enemy's vehicles as omnipotent gods. Ergo, on the rare occasion that you manage to beat one, you tend to have that euphoric God of War moment that leads to all kinds of interesting excess.

They actually put a toddler in a ballpit and had him shoot somebody, and made school children hunt captives down in an abandoned with Glock-18s and had multiple cameras installed in every room to capture their executions from multiple angles.

Is it really that surprising that they'd torture and kill captured enemy combatants when they were already willing and able to make a show of torturing and killing civilians?
