Ajax vehicles are just about cleared for operational service in the British Army.

It's hard to get much objective evaulation of the Ajax, mainly because any discussion is overtaken by its admittedly atrocious development history, a boondoggle worthy of the Pentagon Wars - supplied years late, billions over budget, with the design changed repeatedly during development and notoriously prototypes that shook so badly they quite literally injured their own crew.

But now - now that it's finally here - actually how is it? Is it an effective vehicle (however belatedly supplied), or is still only worth being kicked across to Ukraine to be drone fodder?

You might be thinking of the IFV replacement program, to replace the Warrior IFV. They decided to go a wheeled platform, the Boxer. A major depart from classical Western doctrine of tracked IFV's with tracked tanks. Oh well.

Ajax is a combat recon, command and utility platform. They don't carry troops like a typical IFV.

Compared to the gold standard Puma:

- way less mobility
- worse protection
- less accurate gun
- less capable ATGM capability if any (seems up in the air)
- no softkill or hardkill system ?!

Considering it's the same price and they could have bought puma a decade ago, terrible fucking deal for a mediocre IFV. So in line with typical british ground combat equipment procurements.

I got to witness the hunter-killer targeting process in person, the speed with which that gigantic turret rapidly spins and adjusts to whatever the commander happens to desire destroyed is nuts. One crew I spoke to reckoned that even accounting for conditions they could wipe out a russian infantry platoon in under a minute

The comparison of the Ajax to the Puma is far from perfect (namely because the Puma is an IFV and the Ajax isn't), however, I am surprised as to why it has a power to weight ratio about 15% lower (also, why does it weigh 38 tons? The only real problem the Puma ever had was that the Bundeswehr both wrote the specs for it, which were the finest shit in all areas, thus expensive as fuck, while also being the only customer and being unwilling to buy in decent quantities, decent rates, or pay for all the costs associated with fielding such equipment like, uh, idk, service, spare parts, ammo, fuel, ...
Thus the fielding process for this one super stingy but also super demanding customer has happened at a glacial pace.
I assign zero blame to the manufacturers and 100% to the procurement idiots on the BW side.

AJAX is not designed or equipped to transport a combat infantry squad and so NOT an IFV.
It is a Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle and its mission set is intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR).
