Chinese armor performs fine in youtube tests by compensated affiliates (even Buffman is technically "compensated") but is largely not-NIJ certified. Militech is the best of the bunch, but they're still shady. People used to slobber over those Botach $50 5.5lb Level IV plates years ago, but there were reported failures even against M855A1 (the plates can't crack arrest for shit - surprise cheap fucking materials) - they got discontinued and quietly replaced with heavier models.
Armor isn't something you can cheap out on. If your ass is to the wall some Chinese stuff can be entertained, but it needs to be made by an actual firm. I've been looking into stuff from Gilliam Technical Services, a small time US-based outfit, that uses a mix of Chinese, Italian, and American materials. Prices are good but, again, no certs. Some test reports. You cannot get M993-rated plates cheaper than this.

The rule of thumb is that a good pair of US-made, no strings attached plates starts at $395. Soft armor is a different story.
