You ears are going to be fucked anyway. Have you ever fired a full mag of .45 or 9mm with no ear pro from a pistol? If you have not, you may want to do it once, so you know what to expect. I promise you it doesn't matter which caliber you select, because it's loud as fuck. I fired off a couple of mags of .45 with no ear pro after some libation one evening in the desert. It sucks man. My hearing was fucked for an entire day afterwards. I would rather be deaf than dead though....

If you're using a suppressor, then any subsonic round is better than a supersonic round; however, if you're unsuppressed, then a smaller powder charge is what you're looking for.

Get with times, gramps. Everyone with 1911s are using 8 round mags, if not 10 rounders. Modern polymer double-stack 45s all hold 10 rounds minimum; usually around 13-15 rounds in a flush-fit mag.

But ive fired a few rounds of 9MM unsuppressed with no ear pro and it hurt quite a bit. Not as bad as 5.56, which was debilitatingly painful, but still painful.
As such, how am i supposed to avoid flinching in a self defense encounter?

Nah, youd think being subsonic would make a difference but honestly your standard 230gr ammo sounds just as loud, maybe a hair louder, that supersonic 9mm. Both are a lot better than something like .357 magnum or sig though.
