Possibly. I played various sports growing up in Europe and never once wore a jockstrap, saw a jockstrap on anyone, or even heard about jockstraps. I think I didn't even know they were a thing until I found out about them from American porn and classic 1980s American teen movies. They do feel American to me

Then again, to be fair, the sports I played growing up weren't impact sports. I did gymnastics, judo, equestrian, and tennis (I was terrible at tennis). Maybe the people doing taekwondo or kickboxing were wearing jockstraps and cups

Now I do weightlifting, running, swimming, and lacrosse and only lacrosse is an impact sport where wearing a cup makes sense. I wear mine in a jockstrap over my underwear (sometimes under, either works fine), but everyone else on my team, even the other gay guys, wear their cup in compression shorts. I am very sad about this sorry state of things! Some of them even wear their compression shorts over their underwear, can you believe it? How can this be comfortable? I suspect that at one point in the story, when stakes and drama are high, Chase's mum will turn into a key from drinking too much narratonin, and this will kick Buddy out of being a key because there can only be so many keys

As keys aren't technically alive, Chase's mum's cancer will stop growing, but now Chase and Deacon must hide Buddy in Chase's room (sleepover episode! kisses and awkward handjobs! - hopefully) without their grandpa or the horse realizing it, work together to fight Prunella's mum (who will turn out to be the baddy, not sure how Prunella will take it), bring the keys together, and make Chase's mum human and healthy again, unless she likes her new condition

I'm not quite sure where Linda fits in (grandpa's nemesis from the bake sale) but I'm sure she has a role to play in the final denouement

The relationsihp isn't purely tangentional to either of the plot of those 2. Even though its not the main focus of the comic, and their gayness isn't a big deal in story, the relationships do plays a big role in both.
