If looking for causes, I think its helpful to stick with known obvious facts, understanding that humans do not always deserve the flattery and excuses we make for ourselves. For example, for males at least, sex, as we call many things, is fun, and we do what we can get away with if there are no real consequences.
So if you remove consequences, people will do a lot of things, and justify the actions after the fact. Which makes up a great deal of the noise inserted in explanations, even for the most pious. Societies even make odd excuses for married intercourse for reproduction, so this isnt a swipe at the more promiscuous, less socially tolerated.
Another thing is that I think its helpful to also distinguish the enjoyment of something from overwhelming enthusiasm in it. It is in this you find the personality profiles that form recognizable patterns. For example, if someone is promiscuous, or prefers one sex over another, or certain roles, you will find reasons if you ask. And often it takes asking, because we cant always rely on ourselves to get objective information.
Motives produce actions, and they form organically; they have reasons. Its just that often, we find explanations for our basest motives to be base themselves, and getting to near an answer can wound or threaten our self image, individually or collectively, regardless of what the image is.
I just thought it would be helpful to remember these things than get flamed for flushing out particular causes for this or that specific motive. People can argue specific things, but its more difficult to argue that motives can be found if you look.
