cage is really unfairly underrated, because of his pig father, and his pig father's personal dollhouse, known as "the academy." everyone fellates DDL but he never has real madness in his performances. he's always entirely controlled, and methodical, and methodological. his emotions are totally staged and he requires someone like PTA, who films theater, to set and block his staged emotions.
cage is an actor who isn't afraid to look like he's going to a 10, or just go to a 10, intuitively. he's an a non-actor's actor, who lives the mind of Bruno S., and is therefore capable of working, not just within the interlocking stages of a filmed theatrical production, and conscious acting "method," but also, within the world of cinema, with directors like herzog, on things like "bad lieutenant," which achieve the dionysian dream, the union of music and painting. there's this violent comic nihilism he brings to every performance that seems to say, "celebrities aren't really actors, are we? i'm not really taking this seriously, and neither should you. just have fun with it, baby." i'm not sure it would translate to the stage, but as far as film-model celebrities, "film actors," go, cage's style, as far as i'm concerned, is unsurpassed. he simply knows how to be filmed
