I was hoping by complimenting the dog id get the option to pet said dog but today is not my day. I havent pet a dog in years i think..

That's why if you want them to pay attention you don't say anything until you make eye contact, when you see the black of their eyes, lock your gaze and say it, they won't be able to ignore you.

Or just look at the dog until he feels the urge to do that thing they do with their heads and front paws <3
