I mean, it sort of makes sense: if you consider that humans used to have much shorter life spans, then it sort of follows that there would be a huge chunk of our development that assumes that period of trust and intimacy, before we learn competition among each other.

Its so easy to forget that most of our existence, we died much sooner. So evolutionarily speaking, it sort of makes sense that we would be wired to feel more intimate the way teenage friends are, with more empathy and vulnerability.

Im sure its all been said before. Theres tons of stories in our cultures about the primacy of friendships in youth and young adults compared to later years, and how friendships as youth are so much more passionate.

Likewise, you often hear about it in battle, where young guys become close like family in a way that they wont again later in life.

There again, its time related.

Maybe thats something we have overlooked. That is, what happens when you take a social animal and triple its lifespan. How can they relate to each other the same way. If we all lived to be 300 years old, how could we ever expect to hold on to that sense of romance the whole time, how could we relate.

Its just that nagging sense that maybe by living longer, we have pushed beyond our biological predispositions to be as social and empathetic as we were meant to be.

I am probably not being clear, as it is a difficult topic for me to articulate. I think we both see that contrast you seem to be describing between the "mature" man and the more trusting young male. And I think you are right that society does direct males to "toughen up" and abandon that trust to be strong and less vulnerable.

What I meant to highlight is that it comes natural to youth in thinking social creatures, that mathematically, its logical to assume a person with less experience with treachery, aggression and manipulation would be more trusting of its peers.

So if a life span were commonly shorter, then it would be common for such social thinking creatures to spend most of their life with that sense of intimacy and trust. Its more chronological than a coincidence of being young when it occurs.

And that goes back to my point about same sex intimacy, with or without ideas of 'sex' being a time anomaly in modern society, and how maybe those who hold on to it are just manifesting that earlier resistance in our history to the 'sadder but wiser' stages of what we call maturity. Put another way, males no longer live as brothers and deep friends for most of their lives and then are taken by battle or disease. But instead, continue to live much longer now, and spend much more time bearing and weathering the competition of peers for decades past their natural prime.

And that perhaps that romantic core of what we view as 'gay' in whatever language or culture is a natural resistance to that modern proposition.

That is where I think we might agree; as you put it, not all men adapt to the modern proposition of 'maturity' and cold, competitive grudging tolerance of each other. But instead, embrace that intimacy and dont relinquish it.

And if someone holds on to that mindset long past the common age, then ideas like sexual expression of that longing for peer male comfort would seem more natural to them. That is, how could it be true otherwise.

Because it seems exceptional, people categorize it as 'other'. But like you say, I dont think it really is, but rather completely natural.
