I think transphobia is more of an issue in those countries than, for example, the pnw. The US is a massive place so to some extent people do "flee" states to go to other color coded ones. In Europe, you can't really "flee" from one country to another. Yes, there is the Schengen but there are more soft barriers than when moving from Indiana to California.
It's one thing to write into law tolerance and acceptance but having it be real is different. It's not even necessarily hostility it's just that passive reproach and anxiety. I felt in parts of the US that you could be trans and it literally was no more of an issue than being ginger or black and I have never felt that anywhere else, although I haven't been to Canada or Denmark.
I also recognize that West Virginia or Alabama or wherever are probably very bad places to be at.
