Being trans is considered someone's private business here. Culturally there is a feeling that sort of stuff should be left alone and not pried into, it is the same reason abortion is less of an issue here then it is elsewhere.
The negative flip side to this is that this also means that gender affirming care is not on our public medical system and cannot even be claimed via private health.

Semi-rural Australia is actually surprisingly queer and I have seen a number of other trans people (and more broadly queer) just living their lives. I guess due to city rents driving so many people into the country.

We never really had a hard distinction in the public conscious between gay men and transwomen so a bunch of people just think trannies = gay men that wear dresses (and deserve rights like gay men).


We are disproportionately non-religious compared to peer-nations we also have a notable anti-religious bloc (that stems from the WASP v irish catho racism that was prominent in the past) that despises anything perceived as religion getting involved in politics or public life more broadly. The anti-tranny shit was religious coded from the jump, owing to the association with Abbott and Catho cutout lobby groups.


We've had notable broadly popular cultural manifestations of "trannies", Priscilla queen of the desert, Dame Edna. Priscilla queen of the desert in particular had popular re-enactments things here through rural regions which put "trannies" in some contact with more conservative regions.


Trans rights, of-course, have significant overlap with medicine and our public health bodies are pretty well insulated from politics and most people want them to be completely apolitical. Australia had a world leading response to AIDS as well because it was run by these same agencies.
