I was using a proper hair trimmer for the initial pass (got really thick leg hair, it needed one) plus a Phillips Norelco face trimmer to smooth it out afterwards. You can still feel little pricklies when you rub your hand the wrong way, but that's the best you can do when you don't have the money for a waxing, and it's still buttery smooth when you rub it the right way a day later.

Of course I'd prefer never having to shave, but I'm a bit more fortunate than most since I've got a bit of native American kicking around in me that makes it so I only really grow anything beyond stubble on my arms, legs, lower belly and back which can easily and satisfyingly be dealt with using an electric razor.
