No, everyone did not embrace us but it was much better than in previous decades.

What happened: an incredibly well-funded smear campaign by religious fundamentalists and politicians and pundits trying to distract from how bad their policies are for their base.

Trans people make for lurid stories (sex! surgery! gender!), we're a small and fairly powerless demographic and thus easily lied about.

They focus tested different arguments against us until they landed on the only two that normal people even halfway care about: minors transitioning and "fairness in sports" (both heavily lied about). Then blasted that through every media and social media opportunity they had until they created a kind of false consensus about us.

Most people still do not care about us, and we're still in last place for issues of political relevance to people. But they have made the general population more ignorant about us.

Oh, and I couldn't do it about gay people any more because they decisively lost on gay marriage, and gay people being increasingly in public life meant that people were less homophobic by default. No more "if two men can get married we'll all be marrying goats" shit. At least, not credibly.

There wasn't the drag queen satanic panic, sure, but people saw us as disgusting trash and we overwhelmingly died young from murder, homelessness, and deaths of despair. People could pretty much do and say whatever they wanted to you and there was no legal or social protection.

Almost everyone I know who came out when I did and medically transitioned was sexually abused by a medical professional because it was so hard to get through the process and doctors knew we were seen as worthless by society at large.
