One of my best friends is like this. They always feel like everybody hates them for no reason, or that they're really embarrassing in a way that everybody is whispering about but nobody will admit. And they hate getting gifts: it always freaks them out and they feel like people are trying to prank them or control them. And they’re kind of people-pleasing but also competitive, and they hate losing, but they feel guilty for being not being humble enough, and they’re always yapping about their neuroses to everybody, and I guess they got hurt really badly by some insanely toxic relationships before I met them...

But actually they’re really important to me and my friends. They’re really funny and thoughtful. They host parties at their house and they drive friends everywhere (some of us can’t drive), and we would care about them even if they didn’t do anything for us because we like having them around.
