/voicegen/ voice general for voices under training and otherwise
>what is /voicegen/?
/voicegen/ is primarily a general made for trans people on /lgbt/ to share recordings of their voices so as to get feedback, advice, or opinions, to help achieve the voice they want. This does not mean that you must be trans to post! Remember that this is a community-led thread and not a source for professional advice; please be kind to one another!

>how do I post?
It's easy - just record yourself on vocaroo.com, rate others in the thread, and post! That last point is very important - to keep the thread alive and ensure engagement, it is strongly recommended to NOT respond to those who don't do their part, as it is very impolite and leads to threads dying. You need not be an expert; trying your best is all we ask! Even a simple rating can be helpful.

>how do I get started?
There are several ways! You're always welcome to ask for advice here, and there is a wealth of video and written resources available online. However, we tend to believe that there is no alternative to repeated practice and reflection, so exercises that advertise "get a passing voice quick" tend to be confirmation bias from people with a great natural ability to control their voice.
That said, some channels to watch are:
Zoey Alexandria (rip)
TransVoiceLessons

>what do I read?
What we would recommend is to vary what you read aloud - this might be divided into three broad categories:
- flat reading, as if you were reading to an audience, in a neutral, affectless way, usually to focus more on things like pitch or resonance, and less on things like cadence, diction, or intonation
- voice acting, as in you find some piece of media to act: do intonations, try different voices, have fun! Edge Studio is a known resource for texts such as these.
- talking, as in just talking as yourself: improvise, imagine a conversation!

it's not great and it kind of sounds confusing without the instrumentation behind it lole

>>40419352
it sounds to me like your resonance is low. have you tried voice-training before? from where you are now, you will probably need to raise your larynx and relax your throat, and see where that gets you. if you don't know how to do that, the big dog, small dog exercise is recommended (and intuitive!) but i am partial to swallow-and-hold. both of these you can learn about from short videos on YouTube, but in short, the former has you pant as if you are a large tired dog, and then a small tired dog (the small dog is what you want), and the latter has you swallow and hold your larynx at the apex of its movement up your throat; from there you relax without lowering it.

i'm sorry if i'm overexplaining....i didn't want to wait for an answer to the question in case i fall asleep before you respond which could be any minute now. yawn
anyhow good luck <3

don't even think it sounds bad, main issue is it's just really nasal. first few seconds were also really breathy sounding. might need some more resonance. second recording was better overall, but i get the feeling you cant sustain that and it's still really nasal

>>40420215
>40420798
sounds breathy and soft spoken. it's not bad, reads as fem, but i'd think it was a strange voice in most contexts. sounds much better in the second post

>>40420642
it kind of sounds like your voice is recovering, like you strained it from yelling too much. maybe thats just the VFS recovery still, idk what to do about that other than wait. also kind of sounds like a young boy/androgynous, are you putting any effort in or is that just how you sound after VFS?

>>40420802
it's kind of deep, but not too deep. i think it's pretty good, but also breathy and quiet

>>40420642
don't stress too much nona. to me, your voice sounds a little weak (possibly because you were drunk, although it sounded a little weak last thread as well) but it could not in any way be construed to sound like an adult male voice. like ever. that being said, you do sound frighteningly similar to one of the barely-pubescent boys i was teaching this past year.
>>40420728
the very beginning of your recording sounds amazing but then it gets a little crunchy and nasal. i think you just need to find a middle ground! if this makes sense, try speaking from a lower part of your throat, rather than like all the way up in the crook of your neck (unless you aren't; that's just what it sounds like to me)
>>40420802
i think the only thing keeping this from being perfect is that it is just a little nasal. if it isn't already, try to relax your throat just a tiny bit more
>>40422962
i also think that this is pretty good but just a bit nasal......is the back of your tongue close to your palate when you speak?

uhhh i don't think so, not particularly? should it be?

throat singing needs some work though for sure lol.
for the other singing clip, compared to the original, it is a bit pitchy at times. like, it's alright for just casual fun singing in the car or whatever. i cant sing at all though so i can't really give out any tips :c

throat singing (real)

>>40424440
it sounds to me like you may be just raising your palate, rather than your larynx, but i could be wrong....that's just the sense i get when i attempt to recreate the sound of your voice. when you are raising your larynx, what does it feel like? is the tongue very involved? you should not have to move your tongue at all, ideally. maybe you aren't moving it and i am totally wrong. hopefully that is helpfu, though.....
>>40424697
>throat singing needs some work though for sure lol
yayaya......how about now? i'm pretty sure this is correct
and no your tongue should not have to move..my guess was just wrong. sorry nona :( i will have to keep thinking and see if i can determine what else it could be.

when you say "trying again" you sound almost like a cis woman i know! also good that you understood what i was talking about even though i misspoke lol i meant to say tongue, not palate, the first time. anyhow it seems from this recording that the problem could just be that you have a lot of low vocal fry???? maybe? this is also just how it feels to me when i try to recreate your voice so i could be wrong..but thst might be something to play around with.

Im Not an Expert in Voicefem By any means, But in Terms of Critique.

You dont Pronounce Your "R"s Properly & Have them More like Ws, Witch Makes you Sound like Youre Using UWUSpeak Sometimes ( EG : "Exwasizes" Instead of "Exorsizes")

& You Tend to Go a little Higher Pitched Then youre Comfortable at Times & End up Cracking your Voice, Go slightly Lower so You dont have As Much Cracking, & Your voice Can be a Little Tight & Strained at Times, you Dont Sound Breathy to Me & could Stand to Chill out Slightly & be More Breathy sometimes.

i never noticed i pronounce my Rs like that but you're right ToT i'm not doing that intentionally at all i think that's just how i talk, i should probably pay more attention to that though so i don't sound wetawded
and i definitely should chill out, i think that'll be hard for me though because i tend to get excited easily :(
i'll probably try to focus on having a less strained voice rather than lowering it though that is good advice, i think i kinda just hope if i keep talking high all the time then eventually i just won't crack but maybe that's not how it works, i just like having a high voice :(
thank you for the advice though, i'll work on it!

>i think i kinda just hope if i keep talking high all the time then eventually i just won't crack but maybe that's not how it works
you may just have to work your way up to going higher little by little instead of trying to go up as high as you can and staying there, pushing yourself for too hard too long can cause you to hurt your voice. Going up just a little from your natural range and practicing that until it’s very easy for you and then going a little higher each time until you can do the higher voice consistently. I know how it feels to want to stay in the range that’ll give you the least dysphoria though.

As for the “forced” thing, I may have been tripping balls because you sound a lot better in these recordings, maybe it’s because you’re just speaking normally here and not reading from a script. You have a very rich sound and your pitch is good too. As for the soft palate thing I am now no longer sure how much you actually need it, but I’ll share a vid with you anyway if you or anyone else might be interested: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=phuaeXjWpSQ

Resonance isn't all there but sounds good, and when you were reading at the end it was a bit whispery which is probably just theatrics so not necessarily an issue. Would probably clock but it's not screaming male or anything

Same as the one before, whispery but probs theatrics. Sounds more integral though so that might be an actual issue for you. Pitch is good. Weight is a bit heavy, try weight exercise in particular.

your voice doesn't sound particularly nasal to me, but in trying to recreate the sound of it with my own, i can only really do it by speaking constricting my throat and speaking nasally (this may mean nothing since everyone has a different vocal tract, but i am trying.....). if it doesn't already, your throat should feel relaxed.

also, it is good to not fear a lower pitch!! resonance is most of what's important. relatedly, i may have been off-base, before. have you tried playing with resonance at all? that may help a bit.
>>40453751
what is "not passing"? no, vfs is not a miracle, but that's not to say you're all done and it's over and there's nothing left you can do. it does sound like you're speaking with a very deep and open throat, despite your great resonance. it may help to look there. if the sound of your voice were just a little brighter, i imagine you might feel better about it.
anyways, though, i don't think you sound like a man, so it would be helpful to know what you mean when you say you were not passing. your voice is a bit unusually dark, but it's certainly not the first voice like that i have ever heard.

>>40455507
i think youre using nasality/quietness to mask other qualities, which are still there, just obscured. i would work on your resonance/size
>>40455441
i think your voice mostly sounds good! but you have a lot of vocal fry, which makes it sound weaker as if youre sick, when you raise your pitch it makes it sound a lot weaker. i think you need to work on strengthening your voice and expanding your range

i do know that i sound like bubble wrap personified, but it isn't (or at least does not seem to me to be) because of a particular way that i'm speaking, e.g. restricting my range for the purpose of affecting a certain voice...i have sort of always sounded like that pretty much no matter what lol. is there a way to remove that from my voice without introducing an unnatural amount of breath (or force)? that is the only way i have been able to do so and i have sort of just accepted that the fry is a part of how i sound.

Thanks for the feedback anon! As for your voice I think it's good but maybe it has a slightly low resonance? Still fine but might be something to work on vocal size
Also I'm sorry you had to deal with life shit. Hope you're doing good now with your partner!

Sounds like you pass (through a tunnel lmao)
>>40457426
Sounds like a young dude, but you're young so seems perfect.

Still a bit nasal with a trans quality I think but it's better I think? It just takes practice. Try to breathe more and do some exercises regarding air I'd say, I'm not good at teaching those and I forgot them but that's what my voice therapist told me back when I went there (only thing we practiced lol)

Hope I didn't forget anyone I haven't already given feedback! I'm going back into my coma listening to maidcore half depressed

oh nona i'm sorry :( i'm glad you still had a good weekend though and i hope things only get easier from here. you sound great this time, too! i compared the recording you made for me to the one you made for the thread in general and they don't sound any different to me. my first thought, though, which i didn't have last time, is that your voice is just, like, the slightest bit breathy, but i could just be crazy. not unheard-of
i'd really love for my singing to sound female or at the very least androgynous but i'm pretty content at this point with the idea that it just isn't going to be that perfect lol. i am mostly concerned with the technique ;p thank you for the feedback !

i hope things will get easier for you, too......passive practice is good and i don't think you always have to get direct feedback to improve :) working at it on your own time will help you, too. i had the same gut thought about your voice, this time (that it is a little breathy), which i hadn't really ever thought before, so it really could just be that i am hearing things. but that is all i've really got, besides that i think it sounds as good as usual!

But breathy is sexier right?!
But thanks, yeah I'm just... not there mentally lately. I have a surgery coming up too (nothing major lol cosmetic) which makes me anxious and I just wanna get it over with it's in a bit more than a week... and lately I am so not confident in my passing and looks esp. since my hair is at the worst length ever - I had my hair super short before which fit me well but now I want to grow it back out to long but until then like it's at awkward lengths that make me feel manly af but it's also possibly cuz it's the kind of length I had pre transition idk whatever I'm just ranting lol
I wanna be able to sing too one day I should practice that once I'm feeling better!
