I started doing this when I started feeling pretty. Prior to my transition I didn't take many selfies because I felt ugly. I think cis women do this for a similar reason, in that they feel pretty and want to show off. Whereas nu-males are just trying to be "quirky" are not motivated to brag about their looks at all.
