I came out over twenty years ago, so I'm pretty used to being despised. Despite the abysmally shitty place we're in currently, I still feel that watching things become better for us than I literally could have ever dreamed has permanently changed how I view our possibilities.

first of all, that gay marriage passed in my lifetime and gays became assimilated to the point that some of the right wing became markedly less homophobic, and some of it had to intentionally focus on how to run propaganda against the next rung down because the public wouldn't accept the same homophobic arguments any more. it's possible for that to happen for us too. once you integrate a group, it becomes harder and harder to lie about them.

Also watching the smear campaign evolve over the years? The bathroom thing was not as successful as they wanted it to be, so they had to move on to "fairness in sports" and minors transitioning, and they still had to lie about those topics, and it's still at the bottom of most people's ranking of relevant political issues. That doesn't matter that much under this current administration, but it makes me much more hopeful over the long long run. Most people are not as bad as this incredibly vocal minority wants them to be.

when i was a kid it was not legal to be out as gay in many settings. thats not to say things are getting better but more to say there's plenty of lgbt people who have known hard times and got through it. this will be the same. i have coped by immediately doing what i can to put the genie back in the bottle and remove any records of me being trans. i have told all my friends that they need to shut up about it. and i will keep my head down until things get better. im just a regular woman for a bit. it will of course involve some weird situations but its important to have grit and trust you can navigate them as they come up
