first mmo i got into, liked the more action focused gameplay, when i tried to pick up other mmos the lack of auto attack and huge skill bars really put me off, so i stuck to it.

why: i grew up with the ff series as a whole so i gravitated towards ffxiv at first but didn’t like it, that was pre-heavensward tho and i tried it again years later after playing more mmos and ultimately fell in love w the gameplay and universe, kind of hate the current 2min meta tho
i also love the screenshot function, but i’m disgusted by modbeasts which is why i never share my mare code or join syncshells

The player base had riots that forced the company to cancel their pride events back in 2013 or so, and even though eventually the parent company forced these events to move forward in 2018, players managed to get them cancelled again this year. This is, for one funny, but also attests to the genuine power the players have over the direction of the game, it’s not just a meme. They vote on all major content and have since inception, they don’t force marketing or ads or crossovers or mtx, and they keep a genuine old school vibe. It’s the last place you can find a politics free game built to entertain you and not manipulate you into a purchase, ideology, or anger.

favorite is probably WoW, the vanilla to wotlk era
for a lot of reasons, too many reasons to really put into a post
the game does so many little things right that it adds up to a game with an unmatched level of polish for the time that blizzard used to be famous for
plenty of other MMOs have specific things they do better than WoW but they never manage achieve that same consistency throughout their game that old blizzard did

WoW from 2005-BFA, then classic wow from 2019-ulduar wotlk. I went super hard in classic, did all the raids and grinded out High Warlord in 2020. Even helped two different guildies do the AQ scepter quest to get their battletanks. I loved playing that game, at least to an extent. By the time I was in my last two honor resets for R14 I was over it however
I don't play anymore though because it's such a time sink and I have to work alot more to survive

why: countless hours spent in them when I was younger and wow specifically I come back to now and again because I just love the world. I pretty much just play MMO's for the leveling experience, that's when you see the world rather than do your dailies and sit in town all day. I could never deal with the end game it feels like filler to me. To me the game is at its best when I experience it like any other RPG with the MMO part just used to help feel the world more alive and no game has a better world that I've experienced than WoW. The little ambient stories, the zones, the relative lack of loading screens. It just helped make it all feel cohesive. Especially the early days where you didn't even get a mount until you were deep in there and then it didn't come cheap. An MMO that forces you to stop and smell the roses because you're not getting anywhere in the next hour is the shit I play for. I like seeing it all. Not even the written stuff, I scroll through it, but the world itself the stories it can tell without writing them down, I love that shit, Kalimdor is gorgeous. And I may have been one of the few people that loved Cataclysm. Seeing the whole map thrust forward in time and experiencing it again with the added history was amazing, not to mention they optimized a lot of the quests to lower that headache. I think the vibe of WoW is what made it last, that blizzard polish that I guess you only get by abusing your staff, I'm not sure. But damn they did good work.

I played Runescape up to level 7 as a kid and then Dragon's Nest for like 2 hours because it had fun combat and you could play a tiny girl. Then I never really played any MMO again.
