If you think 4chan is slow, you'll think the rest are really dead, but I got started on imageboards that weren't 4chan, so the speed isn't an issue to me.

Kohlchan /int/ is always quite active. 8moe has a very active videogame scene, but slow on all other fronts. Over at zzz, we usually get a few posts per hour on /b/ and our /v/ board has pretty good activity as well. I would say those are the three most active English language imageboards after 4chan. They would all of course be more active if more people branched and you can always use multiple sites, so there is always going to be something to reply to.
