The beam stays connected WAY further than you might realize, so stay as far back from sightlines as possible. Also, always be ready to ditch your teammates if they go way out of position. Healing teammates is like walking a dog; don't let them pull you where you don't want to go. Also: use the crusader's crossbow because it heals teammates on hit (good when it's too dangerous to reach them normally) and is much easier to aim.
There's a lot of things that the medic can do to increase survivability, but you are still reliant on your team to not let you die. Sometimes they'll suck at that and you can't do anything. If you're alone, it's better to walk to spawn to find a teammate rather than be caught out. Kinda yapping but I feel like this could help
