I don't know how to explain it but basically before homophobia in average 4chan user was mostly "casual" like coming up from jokes and such, but increasingly the hate became more... contextualized? And meta? Like nowadays there's more vitriol in homophobic posts than before and while before it was just "hahaha homosex funny" nowadays most of the anti-fag posts are made with specific goal and reason, like a lot of the people genuinely think that by pushing certain opinions on here they can then make them seep into the mainstream (it does look like that is exactly what is happening but i feel like 4chan is more of a reflection of things that are started happening outside of it).
Like crust posting on /tv/ isn't just casual homophobia where one laughs at haha homosex, it's specifically made with the meta knowledge that there are probably fags on the board who will get offended and with the meta knowledge that this meme could seep into the "mainstream discourse" and add to some societal change or shit like that.

In the past it used to be easy to say "yea i support these minority groups everyone should be treated equally!"
But then the dialog shifted, being equal wasnt enough. White males became the enemy. They had to be actively harmed. They had to be belittled, and shamed, and blamed for all the worlds woes. Anyone who disagreed became a Nazi. The science was settled and white males were on the wrong side of history.
But the ratcheting extremist of leftists had no pressure relief valve. The moral superiority arms race required ever new absurd special interest groups to worship and never criticize. People who voted for a black man and supported gay marriage became classified as Nazis overnight if they didnt unquestioningly support everything minority groups demanded.
