It is kinda like how you have passoids who still insist on using the mens room and generally avoiding women only spaces.
Lots of trans girls have been kinda mindfucked by the current state of the world and would rather put themselves in danger or invalidate their own identities, rather then risk making a cis woman feel uncomfortable.
The sapphic/lesbian thing is just an extension of this. Using a broader term so as to not feel like they are 'intruding' on cis women.
The whole thing is honestly kinda tragic and I think speaks much more to the kind of person the average trans woman is far better than the rare rape-hon does.
