Gender is derived from sex. It comes from sex. It’s another way of saying “this is my sexual identity”. Gender wouldn’t actually exist without sex. Some cultures/languages don’t even have a word for it; it’s just sex; synonymous.

And do note that sexual attraction =|= sexual identity.

If sex didn’t exist gender could not be a thing. The superficiality of gender is just surface level sex.

interestingly, language is naturally, if not inherently, descriptive, rather than prescreptive, hence the term "gender" now being used to refer to the some facets of the way an individual presents and exists in society
it is strongly correlated with and usually very much related to an individual's sex, though

The word gender originally referred to grammatical categories (masculine and feminine words), then it became an euphemism for biological sex
