this place is genuinely interesting, i heard about it before. from what i understand stalin established it and sold it to jews as paradise, but in reality he just wanted to populate the far east of russia and stop cossacks and chinese from making inroads. in reality the place was a total wasteland where nobody wanted to live but the soviets allowed private land ownership there in an attempt to make it attractive. plenty of jews did actually fall for the meme and moved there but as time went on more and more of them emigrated to israel and there are only a few hundred left now. it still keeps its status as a jewish oblast though, it's the only officially jewish jurisdiction in the world apart from the state of israel itself and yiddish is recognised as a minority language. it's weird as hell but fascinating.
