Since the octahedron is dual to the cube which is analogous to F_2^3, the boymoders walk may be characterized as some sum over the natural basis there. The walk must sum to 0 (over a vector space with field of characteristic 2) and the basis is orthogonal, so each basis vector must appear an even number of times. This allows us to immediately conclude that the probability is 0 for any uneven n. For an even n, the amount of walks that return to F is equal to the amount of even 3-partitions of an n-element set (which corresponds to the steps in the walk), which is (3^n + 3) / 4.
