i take issue with
1. the strict belief that hormonal transition is tantamount to chemical castration and 2. your use of the word "physically"
which makes this whole conversation a real bitch to have in really clear terms.
i don't usually like to speak in absolutes, but it doesn't seem logical that anyone should need to undergo hormone replacement therapy, or be chemically castrated, using both of these terms literally, for their happiness if they are physically healthy. i can't think of any reason. gender dysphoria is a mental condition. psychic unwellness. for this, someone might pursue hormone replacement therapy, or "chemical castration" (cacophemistically), or chemical castration (literally). currently, transitioning is the only known treatment for gender dysphoria, and this does not necessarily need to be hormonal, but in many cases (mine) the hormones are necessary. i don't want to be a woman; i want to be female. social transition would not alleviate any pain for me, but hormones have.
