There's difference in scope, for one. Being not-a-drug-addict is the baseline human experience. Being a drug addict is also a choice, made by me, and not something that was dealt to me.
There's also the difference in magnitude. By pushing to eliminate my drug addiction, I'm not pushing to eliminate all possible negative things that might ever happen to me.
You can help disambiguate clearly: if you had a button which would eliminate all possibility of unexpected potentially-negative events from happening to you, ever, would you press it? If so, you're pushing for a degree of change that's so far off the scale of "self-improvement good" that it might as well be on Mars. But you know that.
