First of all the Book of Genesis is quite literally mythology, i.e quasi-fiction containing spiritual rather than literal truth. And it doesn't actually say that gay sex was the sin in question. People just infer that from the interaction that takes place outside Lot's house. We can infer though that Sodom is a place where its the custom to put one's own gratification first without regard for others, i.e by completely inverting basic hospitality norms to the point that it was apparently the custom to basically gang-rape any new visitors. So what are we actually being told here? The most straightforward interpretation would be that selfishness leads to downfall and destruction. Unironically Biblical literalism is such a fucking plague.
