Anyone have any experience moving interstate?
I'm looking to move to Melbourne in the future, but have no idea how I'm supposed to secure an apartment. I cannot fly interstate every weekend just to attend some inspections.

Also looking for suggestions for nice places in Melbourne to live. The more queer the better. I have been eyeing up Brunswick and Fitzroy, but I don't actually know what they are like on the ground.
I'm really worried about being able to make friends once I do move.

I just moved back to Melbourne last month from Brisbane. You should check out the inner western suburbs - Footscray, Seddon, Parkville, that sort of area - as it is close to the city but still really quiet.

I'm looking for more of a dense and built up area with good public transport (as much as they even exist in Australia) to live in. Also a place that also has a pretty well established queer community. Brunswick seems dense enough (and cheap enough) for me and I have heard that it is super queer, but that is obviously not something I'm 100% on.

I have looked into footscray, but I don't know what the character of the place is like and honestly it seems to be mostly low density sprawl that would be hard to get around without a car.

Footscray area is great; you just need to find a place which is close to either Footscray, Middle Footscray or Tottenham stations.

Brunswick/Northcote/Thornbury/Carlton/Collingwood and the surrounding suburbs is all super queer & great picks. I feel like they're sort of the quintessential suburbs you move to when coming from interstate.

I also like them because it seems like it would be super easy to get from them into with the CBD or Richmond and those would be the places that I would be working in.

Well it's nice that I'm not going to be alone. Still kinda puzzled how I'm even supposed to rent a place when I cannot attend an inspection. Securing a place to live while I'm still up here in QLD just seems like a nightmare.

I think in your case, you could probably request a video inspection with the agents, or have a look on FB groups like "Fairy Floss Real Estate" which covers pretty much only that inner North part of Melbourne.

I'm probably going to have to. Just because it seems like every place in my price range lists an inspection as mandatory.
It really makes it hard to move interstate if you do not have any family in the place you are moving to.

I cannot stand it. Just endless crime filled suburban sprawl, hardly any public transport, massive heat island and it floods every summer. Plus, you have to pay out of your nose to live there because of how fucked the rental market in Brisbane is.

I’m in the process of moving there too and yeah it’s just virtual inspections basically. The REA is going to fuck you over and brush over the bad bits which you can’t see for yourself so make sure you have a list of shit to look at (shower/bathroom for leaks and mold, state of the kitchen, etc) but outside of that it’s not too bad just doing them all by phone. Especially if you aren’t on a strict timeline to find a place
