There's a stray cat who keeps wandering into my backyard and absolutely loves me. He always shows his belly and purrs just when I talk to him. Should I adopt him?

cats do that as a way of tricking humans into giving them material goods such as food or shelter. the behavior doesn't actually mean it likes you. cats are like trans women. they're sociopathic manipulators who will feign affection because that's what it was hard wired to do through millions of years of evolution. as soon as it thinks it has won you over it will leap off your lap and run into your kitchen and go mrouw, mrouw, mrouw, mrouw, like they always do. it can't love you. you're just a cat food dispenser to it.

this is why true cat appreciators just open a can of cat food outside, immediately go back in, and watch the cat through the window.

you're just in denial because humans are easily manipulated by cheap imitations of affection, especially when they are lonely. you want a connection to another creature, and you hypnotize yourself into thinking it's real while ignoring all the warning signs like the fact that a cat is pretending to love you. think about it. it's a cat. it has purred at many others before you, while feeling nothing. cats are keen observers and can tell when a human is responding well to their manipulative behavior. it sees you and thinks oh good, here's an easy mark.

when you're wearing rose colored glasses, red flags just look like flags.
