As an FtM that wouldn't take the label ordinarily but would if it humored a potential partner (TERF-y or otherwise), for me it's for coochie. Some women are attached to the lesbian label and want to be "lesbians" with someone else. Fine, I'll call myself a thing, why would I cuck myself out of sex over a word. they would 100% absolutely help you learn more. If you end up doing this make sure not to push back on what they're saying, you're there to learn observationally; they won't tell you as much when you interject to tell them they're irrational.

i've been joking but for a real answer some trans people are just ambivalent about the language of things as far as gender. Like an FtM might want a male's body and genuinely be pursuing that medically but wouldn't mind being referred to as a lesbian or she or whatever. Maybe it's easier in general to explain to people they're a "trans man" but in LGB spaces might be more comfortable going under some sort of extreme version of butch label. Their dysphoria is purely about their body, not about other people's language with them. To be completely honest if more trans people were like this it would likely make trans acceptance easier to achieve in some ways

So sometimes it can feel like still calling yourself a lesbian is "reaching a compromise" where you are allowed to be a bit of yourself while also not going through complete social death.
