>>24456573'Clean your room' was never targeted at men who struggle to get girlfriends. It doesn't even originate from that period of his career, but his psychology lectures prior to his rise to fame (and prior to his self-inflicted retardation), which makes sense given how much it resembles behavioural activation/cbt.
All he was doing was emphasizing the importance of getting the foundations of your life in order first: your immediate environment, the seemingly trivial things you do every day, and the countless tiny mental speed bumps you could fix in five minutes but to which your brain lends no importance. Sit down in your room and ponder everything you could fix about your life in the next 10 minutes, hour, day, then fix those things first. These are the things people with serious mental illnesses are often told to focus on initially because they ARE important and do affect you, yet most people neglect them because they see themselves as above it.
It's not a particularly profound idea-obviously, you could find it in aristotle-but that only makes it stranger when people apparently fail to understand that he wasn't suggesting literally just cleaning your room would change your life.
