>>24443970 (OP)I love Dunk's arms so much. They're so nice. Big and strong and muscular. They definitely feel firm.
>>24444011No, I meant his heraldry.
First for Viserys was a Lysene prostitute and no prince
>"Just the sight of them drove the dragon queen to her knees," he boasted. "And there she will stay, sucking Hizdahr's noble cock, else we smash her walls to rubble."
Is wildfire really magic? Or is it just weird chemistry? Why is it that it can still be made/used even when magic is gone?
>>24444149because magic isn't gone dumbass, the alchemists literally say it gets easier to make wildfire after Daenerys' dragons are born
>>24443970 (OP)walk with me, my sweet summer child, and hear the tale of fat pink masts jutting into sopping wet myrish swamps and black nipples brushing against silk until her cunt became the world while in the privy the princess guzzled arbor gold and shat but the more she drank the more she shat until she was shitting brown water and around her the planks of the ship groaned like a fat man taking a shit while she cursed the gods and nuncle smiled as he broke his fast on black bread, bacon burned black, and mulled wine while capon-grease dribbled down his chin and onto the boiled leather of his jerkin for did she not know words are wind and dark wings bring dark words and a lannister always pays her debts and mayhaps this is nothing but a mummers farce and useless as nipples on a breastplate and the princess has been fucking lancel and moonboy for all nuncle knows and he is the blood of the dragon for the night is dark and full of terrors but where do whores go and jon snow knows nothing and near enough makes no matter so nuncle smiled and dipped the heel of his bread into clam chowder and prayed for half a hundred more heh har HODOR
>>24444149Magic weakens. Dragons shrink and shrivel. Wildfire becomes less green.
>Or is it just weird chemistry? This is indistinguishable from magic.
How do the Alchemists of Kings Landing even replenish their numbers and reserves? How are they funded? Where do they get their budget? Why would anyone want to join them? What do they even do, beyond making green acid? What about in their spare time? Can they do any other "magic" tricks?
>>24444160>because magic isn't gone dumbassThis right here is overlooked nuance. Magic didn't leave completely. It just dwindled to the point where it wouldn't respond. Valyria, the Doom, shook magic or upset it the world over, and even in Qarth or Yi-Ti its existence was said to be in question. Only at places like the Wall, or Asshai, or in the form of the flesh of magical beings, like dragons, or the wood of weirwoods, etc, did it remain. Valyrian roads and other constructions like Dragonstone remain, but not the lost arts on how to work/make them. Much like the glass candles. Much like Valyrian steel.
It seems the more tangible the magic, the more lasting. Even the base of the Hightower still stands.
>>24444188What was Bobby B's tax policy?
>>24444188>Can they do any other "magic" tricks?Yes, Thoros said he tried to spread the light religion showing the Mad King some fire magic tricks but the alchemists new better tricks, so his plain failed.
Also, in Joffrey's wedding, the alchemists create some fire beasts and put them to fight.
>>24444149it's semi magical.
it's based on greek fire but the pyromancers mention spells snd anons brought up them saying it became easier to make.
I think I’m going to give in to Preston schizo-ness and actually agree with him that the maimed “Myrcella” is actually just Rosamund
>>24444241> Four master pyromancers conjured up beasts of living flame to tear at each other with fiery claws whilst the serving men ladeled out bowls of blandissory, a mixture of beef broth and boiled wine sweetened with honey and dotted with blanched almonds and chunks of capon. Then came some strolling pipers and clever dogs and sword swallowers, with buttered pease, chopped nuts, and slivers of swan poached in a sauce of saffron and peaches. ("Not swan again," Tyrion muttered, remembering his supper with his sister on the eve of battle.) A juggler kept a half-dozen swords and axes whirling through the air as skewers of blood sausage were brought sizzling to the tables, a juxtaposition that Tyrion thought passing clever, though not perhaps in the best of taste."Four master pyromancers conjured up beasts of living flame to tear at each other with fiery claws" ...
Was it an illusory trick, or were they actually firebending?
>>24444716Didn't a fire mage in Qarth make a ladder out of flames?
>>24444716isn't there a passage right after that where someone mentions that since the Red Comet came those pyromancers suddenly got way better at their tricks, or is that another book/chapter
>>24443970 (OP)I'm gonna just say it:
King's Landing is poorly designed, and there is no way 500K people would live there.
I have several issues with King's Landing...
>1. Aegon's HillWhy is the a very steep hill right next to an estuary? That seems really unlikely land formation.
>2. DragonsWhy would people want to live next to fucking dragons? I certainly would not want to risk that. What if they lose? They can burn half the city to the ground in hours.
>3. Not understanding riversThe area next to the Blackwater Bay is inaccessible due to hills and a wall, which only leaves a small bit next to Black Rush.
The waterways were veins of cities, that's how food came in, that's how people got rid of waste.
But somehow that small piece of Blackwater Rush is enought to:
>transport, enought food for 500K people>for merchants from Essos to stay in>serve shipyard for Cersei's dromondsBut somehow, this is a trading hub.
>>24445032realistically KL should straddle the Blackwater instead of being built entirely on the north bank

🔍
>>24445032Another issue is city walls.
As the pic related represents, cities had to constantly expand their city walls to account population growth.
These incremental expansion themself shaped the layout of cities.
But king's Landing has no traces of it, just look like it was planned as a megapolis from the get go.

Who do you think will ghostwrite Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring once the fat man dies?
>The dragon has three heads. There are two men in the world who I can trust, if I can find them. I will not be alone then. We will be three against the world, like Aegon and his sisters.
>introduce new character
>kill him in the same book
>do this twice in one book
Uhhhhh….were we supposed to give a shit? Is George just too much of a coward to kill his main characters anymore?

Some speculate the show ending, with Bran becoming ending is what GRRM had in mind for his end.
And some say in the end Bloodraven will overwrite Bran and use Bran's body as a meatpuppet
What I wonder is... how that be in any way a satisfactory ending? Why would the reader care some lich behind the wall kills Bran (which we like) and becomes king?
How would that be a fitting ending? How is it supported by the rest of the series? It's the theme of the series "all good people die and the most evil one wins"?
I just don't get it why grrm would think the readers will be happy with that ending
>>24446396GRRM doesn't want happy readers, he hates you, that's why he isn't finishing the series, after it blew up in popularity he realized that not finishing would piss people off even more.

happy, like in the heroes conquer the antagonists, and there's something resembling or straight up being a happy end

happy, like in they understand how it all comes together, how it all makes sense, even if the end is bittersweet or a tragedy
if GRRM hates the second meaning, then that's idiotic and he's a bad writer. he's not writing postmodernistic avangarde high-art shit, he's writing in a specific genre and there are some rules, but, most importantly, there are a ton of reader expectations
it doesn't mean everybody wins, it doesn't mean happy ending, it doesn't mean the heroes survive, but it does have to have a meaning, it does have to come together in the end

She tossed it underhand, heard the soft plop as it sank below the water.>Her floppy hat went next, then the gloves. They were Salty's too. She emptied her pouch into her palm; five silver stags, nine copper stars, some pennies and halfpennies and groats. She scattered them across the water. Next her boots. They made the loudest splashes. >Her dagger followed, the one she'd gotten off the archer who had begged the Hound for mercy. Her swordbelt went into the canal. Needle was too small to be a proper sword, it was hardly more than a toy. She'd been a stupid little girl when Jon had it made for her. "It's just a sword," she said, aloud this time . . .>. . . but it wasn't.>Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell's grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan's stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow's smile. He used to mess my hair and call me "little sister," she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes.>Polliver had stolen the sword from her when the Mountain's men took her captive, but when she and the Hound walked into the inn at the crossroads, there it was. The gods wanted me to have it. Not the Seven, nor Him of Many Faces, but her father's gods, the old gods of the north. The Many-Faced God can have the rest, she thought, but he can't have this.

How does George plan on redeeming a guy who cuts out the tongues of children?
Season 7 has pulled back the curtain on George's greatest magic trick No one important ever really dies in George's universe, it was always sleight of hand. Jon, Dany, Tyrion, etc...were always going to be safe until the final chapters of the story. Whereas George uses feints and misdirection to hide who the main cast really is, this season made it all too clear that main characters are the ones with names in the show, the ones we care about.
Think about Jon's story arc. How many tales begin with a low or bastard born orphan, alone in the great big world, looking for his identity, only to later reveal he's really a prince? George's trick was to start the story before Jon was alone or an orphan, whereas most stories would start with Jon's story post Ned's death. Ned is our first lead, followed by Robb, etc..we feel the surprise and tragedy of Jon's orphanhood despite the fact that it's a trope. All the markers are there: a bastard? Check. Dead dad? Check. Reason to reclaim family honor? Check. But by beginning the story a generation early, George made it feel like anyone could die, even the supposed lead who was never a lead at all.
Compare this to the fact that no one was shocked by the exposition of the brutality of Ned's father and brother surprisingly dying at the hand of Aerys, despite the unexpected twist it must have been in the moment. I never would have guessed Davos would stick around this long, I felt the same about Theon and Reek. Yet Quentyn seemed important, so did Beric, is Arianne gonna last? Victarion? Lady Stoneheart? Mance Rayder? Jon Connington? In the books, George introduces heroes, villains, and cannon fodder with equal care. Each has a fleshed out story, weight, and purpose.
But in the show expediency is here. World building is done and so is time with doomed characters we care about. By streamlining the plot the show has cut out the magic. No more feeling like Westeros is populated by more than our main cast.

>>24445053>realistically KL should straddle the Blackwater instead of being built entirely on the north bankRealistically, Lord Horroway's Town should be the oldest and largest city in Westeros, as it has the best location for controlling farming and trade.
>>24448383Harrenhal should replace the red keep too
>>24448388Harrenhal was only built 300 years prior, Lord Harroway's Megalopolis would have been the first large settlement of the First Men and then Andals, in fact it would have been the main settlement of the Children of the Forest.
It's all about location.

>>24448636There seems to be a sliding scale of skinchangers, where most are barely able to wrench control of an eagle though. Varamyr seemed to be a bit of prodigy for having a polar bear, snow leopard, pack of wolves, etc.

Valyrians were slaves to the fish people, like the others who had contact with the “nameless” ancient race. They rebelled the same way the Grey King had done, except on societal scale. They stole the “living flame” of the wyrms, as the Grey King had done with Nagga, a sea wyrm.
Weird how no one is catching up on this.

>>24450164Thank God George will never finish this series, there's no way he would have given a proper closure or full explanation on how the other homnid races of Westeros both helped the first civilizations start up but also how they would properly return gradually while also balancing the grounded war plots.
I would say that George should abandon Winds and try to finish D+E and I guess F&B while he is at it, because he is never going to finish Winds.
The blackpill is accepting that he doesn't even really want to write D+E and F&B. He would rather be an ideas guy for tv shows, edit random people's shit, travel the world, open a movie theater and library, produce movies about his friends, and just hang out with his friends in general. Why work when you can live?
>>24450199Yeah the problem is George is too much of a narcissist to ever let that happen. He wants his cake and another cake on top of that like the fat fuck he is then eat both too, in under an hour, you fat piece of shit.
You don't have to sire a son but you could have outsourced the book by now, if not out sourced the editing at least, but he won't, he can give an outline, review, help, but he won't, he can at least, pick out someone, an assistant, or otherwise, to continue his work, but he won't.
He wishes he could finish his shit singlehandedly and still enjoy doing nothing while also doing multiple other projects.

>Dany was Sauron
This was fucking KINO of the highest order and nobody can tell me it wasn't.
It was executed like dogshit in the TV show since DD leaned to heavily into girlbossing her and making her a feminist icon and then didn't have the balls, intelligence or self-awareness to do meta-subversion where the fan favorite character was actually fucking evil as shit.
Just needed appropriate build up, she has a messiah complex, she thinks everyone against her is ontologically evil. Tyrion put it well in the show at least "everywhere she goes, evil men die" Daenerys doesn't have a complex, cultured and Machiavellian, top-down world view that can see grey areas and forgive faults in people. Everything is a nail. Just a bit of pressure and stress and she can convince herself she had no choice but to do crazy bullshit.

I can see Marwyn being like an advisor to her and filling her in on some lore stuff maybe Daenerys kills him after figuring out he taught Mirri after that I'm guessing Victarion arrives on the scene somewhere, he may or may not be the one to save from from the Dothraki sea maybe this is what kicks off their romance, Daenerys is dehydrated and hallucinating then sees this hulking suit of armour walk up to the Dothraki and slaughter them and this is where it begins for the pair.
Maybe after being rescued by Victarion she becomes friends with Moqqoro and even pushes her into adopting the Red Faith as her main religion

>>24453543their real life counterpart was very powerful
Really pisses me off how people think Daenerys is still ages away from invading Westoros. She is literally two steps away. She's about to lead a Dothraki horde on dragonback to undo her city's siege. She gets there, she finds Barristan undoing the siege just fine on his own, but also shes now got two companies of sellswords on her side thanks to Tyrian, and an entire fleet just showed up on her door.
Maybe she kills Victarion, maybe she marries him, maybe she marries then kills him. Either way no ones saying no to her at that point. She takes all her troops in that fleet, sails to Volantis. A massive slave revolt happens in Volantis the second they see her sails, by the time she docks theyre ready to supply her invasion with anything she wants, boom onto Westoros.
>>24453601real and all that but given how slow events moved in the last 2 books I think the big problem is how long it takes to actually get to these events.

>>24454219She's 16 at the end of ADWD.
>>24454336On a re-read of A Feast for Crows, I noticed some odd parts regarding Aeron Damphair. I put together a theory about what might be foreshadowed by these elements that I think is pretty strong.
We are told about Aeron's hatred of his brother Euron, but the Ironborn take the prohibition on kinslaying pretty seriously, especially godly men like Aeron. However, there is a line where Aeron comments on someone who killed a relative by drowning, when told that he spilled the blood of his kin, "If he was drowned, no blood was spilled." If this implies that, at least among the Ironborn, drowning someone is not considered kinslaying, it might give Aeron a way to kill Euron that would be acceptable to him.
In this same chapter, we are told about how Aeron had an almost supernatural ability to urinate. He would piss out hearth fires before he found religion, and if you've ever tried to put out a good-sized campfire with a bucket of water, you'd know how impressive that is. His urination abilities were so impressive that, when he was captive at Casterly Rock, people would come visit him in the gaol just to watch him piss.
If you google "Euron" and disregard everything related to ASoIaF, you'll see that it is the name of a brand of medical supplies. What is the top item produced by Euron? URINE RECEPTACLES.
You can surely see where I'm going with this. I believe that it has been foreshadowed by GRRM that Aeron is going to drown Euron with his urine. I believe this would be a poetic way for Aeron to kill him, considering he was molested by Euron and his role as a priest of the Drowned God. This would be the first person Aeron drowned who did not survive. It might also signal a return to his old life of drinking and having fun after giving up religion.
The recently released Aeron chapter from The Winds of Winter adds more possible connections to this theory. Aeron is currently tied to a prow of a ship. This will give him the opportunity to drink large amounts of seawater. How does drinking seawater kill you? It forces your kidneys to draw excessive water from your body to flush the salt out. By drinking seawater, Aeron could both commit suicide in a godly way, AND produce perhaps the largest piss he's ever made.
So is GRRM almost done by now? It's been some decades?
>>24453613This attitude also pisses me off, how do people miss that Dance is all about Jon and Dany trying to be "good" rulers who solve problems with words and how it fucks both of them up. Clearly when Winds come the time for talk will be over. Dany is coming back from the grassland with fire and blood, and Jon is gonna come back a true king of winter, ready to slay any who disagree with them.
>>24454392On the contrary, I dont think George would be this willing to vent unless he felt good about his progress. Honestly, based on his comments last year about his one regret being not writing the whole thing before publishing any of it, like gene wolfe did with botns, I feel like George got to a good finish point for Winds last year but decided to keep going into Dream to be sure he doesnt have to change anything.

We know that glass candles can do what green seers do/did, and we also know that skinchangers exist all the way over in the east, in Asshai. The Boash’i are also similar. Very similar words are used.
The only people who think Valyrians fear skinchangers are “omg I love wolves :)” female readers
>>24456869What’s funny about female readers of asoiaf if they gravitate so hard towards the old gods and the children of the forest and see them like pagan rebels fighting for a naturistic religion of peace and love when it couldn’t be further from the truth. The children of the forest raped humans and hung their entrails on the branches of weirwoods. Warg kings were rapacious tyrants and the Starks fought green seers in the past.
>>24456928Isn’t this why the Starks (Kings of Winter) are skinchangers to begin with? They mated with the Warg King’s daughters? So they became wargs too?
On the Kings of Winter:
> Chronicles found in the archives of the Night's Watch at the Nightfort (before it was abandoned) speak of the war for Sea Dragon Point, wherein the Starks brought down the Warg King and his inhuman allies, the children of the forest. When the Warg King's last redoubt fell, his sons were put to the sword, along with his beasts and greenseers, whilst his daughters were taken as prizes by their conquerors.
>>24456861>Lol, we can’t just assume children of the forest magic is more potent or powerful than Valyrian magic.if wargs/skinchangers exist in a place, then someone more powerful might exist.

New in the thread.
What is the leading theory as to why George refuses to write Winds? My understanding is that he's had more than enough time to finish it by now, so it's clearly not an issue of being unable to finish it, but rather about him simply not wanting to write it.
Why do you guys think he's refusing to?

>>24456254arya's chapters only get worse as the books go on, especially in the fourth and fifth books
>>24457360here's a few possibilities, it's probably a combination of a multiple of these:
>George has become a perfectionist over time. There are events, plot holes, and timings he just plain ignored in Storm (e.g. Arya's travels make no logistic sense, she just teleports where she's needed) that he got autistic over in Dance and Feast>George doesn't know how to deal with the powercreep of magic in the story due to Sam now having a glass candle and Bran finally making it to Bloodraven>The plot has grown increasingly complex as Feast and Dance blew up the number of PoVs and George can no longer manage the story without creating plotholes>George doesn't know how to handle PoVs running into each other (see the Meereenese Knot) and that's just getting worse as everyone's worlds collide>George has undiagnosed ADHD and can no longer stay focused. He heavily implied this at Bubonicon when he said if he has a dinner at 6pm, there are times he can't write at 10am because he's too focused on the thing he's excited for in the evening.>Now that he has found wealth with the TV show, he wants to help all the people who helped him in life get their shit adapted and is splitting himself too thinly across projects>He's not as motivated as he was when he was a starving author living off book deadlines>JK Rowling winning the Hugo ruined his life and made him a changed manThere's a few others but those are the ones I know off the top of my head
>>24457410Normies like Arya, and many hardcore fans dislike Bran (boring) or Dany (side story) or Sansa (stupid) or Cat (bitch) or Sam (whiny) or even Jon (dull) more than her. Just from what I've seen.

The plot becoming too complex due to too many POV's is easily solved, as is magic power creep:
Okay, Sam has access to a glass candle. So what? Maybe one of the senior Maesters simply tells Sam that he isn't allowed to access the room with the glass candle until he has spent enough time training?
Multiple POV's, why is this a problem? Why can't Dany, Tyrion, Victarion and all the others be in the same chapter? There's no magic rule saying we need to know what is going through each characters head at all times. Make the chapters shorter than typical chapters perhaps, and show multiple perspectives? That would be a fun way to spice it up.
These things are surely not hard?
After all the videos I've seen and what you guys have said, I think it just boils down to him "not wanting to" finish the books. But it would of course be catastrophic for his public image and legacy if he ever openly admitted to it.
>>24459873that's the part that throws me off too, why would he "not want" to finish? i suppose the 'work' load of writing the last two books might not feel like a priority to him any longer but putting it off for this long?

>multiple povsthis one is super bullshit considering we regularly get POV characters interacting in the same chapters, sometimes even getting chapters later spanning the same timeframe but with the other POVs perspective.
so yeah maybe he's just over it but that totally sucks and is unfulfilling and lame and i have a hard time seeing him being like "eh i'm like 75% done with my epic series but i'm just gonna not finish it."

There's a few things I don't understand.
Why did Balon want so desperately to attack the north when the south is way richer and he could've guaranteed half of westeros as his allies?
Why didn't Tyrion arrest Littlefinger as soon as he got to King's Landing when he knew full well that this whole conflict started because he lied about who the dagger belonged to.
Why did Littlefinger even devise the plan with the dagger to begin with since he would've needed Ned or Catelyn to directly ask him wtf is up with the dagger and then also for them to take him at his word, something that I doubt he could've predicted.
Why didn't Varys just expose Littlefinger through an intermediary and thereby fuck up all his plans and ensure peace?
Why didn't the North immediately rise against the Boltons for killing their rightful King and being a bunch of torturers that everyone hated anyway?
Why was Stannis so autistic about attacking king's landing with his ships when he could've simply landed unopposed slightly to the north and fought on land instead?
>>24459940>>24459873>magic systemMaybe power creep was the wrong word. The point is that the magic system in question, glass candles and greenseeing explicitly REMOVE agency of characters in the story if they're just being warged or being sent manipulative dreams. George has said in his interviews at Oxford and Albuquerque that he doesn't know how to handle the magic, and even as recently as his sit down with Abercrombie he asked him about how he deals with a ramping magic system, which stood out as an extremely specific question for himself and the situation he has previously talked about.
>PoVsPreston was claiming that George got to autistic about when different PoVs should show up and how he had to write 1k extra pages of Essos story to figure out when Quentyn, Tyrion and Victarion should arrive in Meereen with respect to Dany's wedding, and compared it to how he never questioned when Jaime should arrive with respect to Tyrion's trial.
I think the bigger issue is that he's become a perfectionist and the blowback on S8 hurt him way more than he'd like to show. He's not mad at D&D at all compared to Condal, so they clearly followed his (limited) instructions but I think he's paranoid about people not liking his ending.
>>24459940>why would he "not want" to finishI believe it just boils down to "writing it isn't fun anymore so fuck this" which in turn just makes him hate the people constantly asking for it. of course he can't say that publicly but everything he's shown in the last 15 years has kinda made believe that's the reason. Jesus, it really has been a decade and half. he could have written half a sentence a day in that time and he'd probably already would have been at two skull crusher sized books already.

As an ugly dude, I think George is brutal in his portrayal of ugliness. It's too realistic.

>Why didn't Varys want peace? He does not seem to want peace at all. Never trust a eunuch.
>Why didn't the North rise up?Worried that the Boltons will destroy them? Idk, Boltons don't seem overwhelmingly strong, seems contrived for them to be secretly mega-loyal to the Starks.
>Why was Stannis autistic?Autism.
>>24454399>Aeron's ship was named the Golden StormToo perfect.
>>24460214>Why did Balon want so desperately to attack the north when the south is way richer and he could've guaranteed half of westeros as his allies?the North was less capable of defending itself and Balon was seething that Ned turned his only son into a prancing greenland basedboy
>Why didn't Varys just expose Littlefinger through an intermediary and thereby fuck up all his plans and ensure peace?because he wants to fuck up the kingdom enough for Daenerys or Aegon VI to be seen as the only legitimate ruler when they land in Westeros
>Why didn't the North immediately rise against the Boltons for killing their rightful King and being a bunch of torturers that everyone hated anyway?most Northern houses lost most of their levies in the south or fighting the ironborn, the only Northern lords who still have sizable armies are the Boltons (because Roose intentionally held his own men out of danger), the Dustins (because Barbrey held back as many of her own men from the call to arms as she thought she could get away with out of spite), and the Manderlys (who were still preparing a naval force to attack the Crownlands when the Red Wedding happened); and the Boltons are backed up by a sizable portion of the Freys' men. The Norferners stand no chance unless they preemptively weaken and isolate the Boltons
>Why was Stannis so autistic about attacking king's landing with his ships when he could've simply landed unopposed slightly to the north and fought on land instead?the Mud Gate is the weakest gate to the city and the only one Stannis thought he could force in a single attack, without laying siege first. I think the geography north of the city also makes a naval landing way harder but I might be making that part up
