it's what nathaniel philbrick specializes in. i've been enjoying his works on washington and "in the heart of the sea" was also good, which is the story of the ship off which the pequod was based.
Skeletons on the Zahara might fit. It's about sailors who shipwrecked on the Western Sahara coast in 1815.

>>24458761 (OP)I really liked The River Of Doubt by Candice Millard. She has a few others which I still haven't read yet. I'm just a big Teddy Roosevelt fan and it was a really interesting and exciting story. Just looked up a picture of her as well and she's kinda cute. Extra bonus.
