Dramatized non-fiction
More books like this? I don't know how to describe it other than "dramatized non-fiction stories".

it's what nathaniel philbrick specializes in. i've been enjoying his works on washington and "in the heart of the sea" was also good, which is the story of the ship off which the pequod was based.

Skeletons on the Zahara might fit. It's about sailors who shipwrecked on the Western Sahara coast in 1815.

Usually its referred to as narrative history as opposed to more academic history.

got this for my mom and she loved it. it's the story over a very bold and ambitious conman. she tells me one detail she enjoyed is that he carried a medical book around and claimed to be a doctor. when someone was injured, he would render aid. sometimes he helped and sometimes he didn't, but people were just as appreciative in either case.

Why would you read this garbage when the primary source is still widely available?

I really liked The River Of Doubt by Candice Millard. She has a few others which I still haven't read yet. I'm just a big Teddy Roosevelt fan and it was a really interesting and exciting story. Just looked up a picture of her as well and she's kinda cute. Extra bonus.
