Even something as basic as symbols might be confusing to them, because they have not suppressed their gut instinct to take everything literally enough to be creative. The big difference is that most of the appeal of their art style was their worlds. E.g. Flapjack looks like shitty docks.
If you remove the environment, you end up with shitty stick noodles that I don't like. I was never impressed with Regular Shows's characters on a technical level, but I like how stupid it gets in the second half of episodes.
