Writers intellectuals and artists aren't appreciated by the death machine that is capitalist society so they must look to enlightened patrons to fund them. Kind of how like professors get their salaries paid by the state to write articles the plebs will never read but which nevertheless advance human knowledge. Pretty common and should be more common, lack of patrons kills culture.

Communism as it has been historically practiced being a disastrous system to base government and economy on and Karl Marx being generally right about capitalism are not mutually exclusive.

Economics is a social science not a hard science. No amount of "knowing" in that field will make Marx's ideal impossible. There is nothing natural about Capitalism and with the right mindset and intentions it can be replaced with something better.

The economy does not necessate wide scale private ownership or social class systems

>There is nothing natural about Capitalism
I disagree. I would argue that people have a base, biological desire to "own" things. We want to have personal control over resources because that ensures our personal survival and also helps ensuring the survival of our children who we can pass our owned things, even if it is detrimental to the group as a whole.
Now obviously something being natural doesn't make it right or good, but Capitalism being more in line with our biological urges is one of the reasons why it works better on average than some other economic models.

Not a marxist, but asking friends for money was not as embarrassing back then as it would be now. Most of the people laughing itt do not have a single friend or even family that would loan them any considerable sum, because thatโ€™s just not done now. This is the world Marx warned against.

Nietzsche received a pension from the University of Basel after resigning from his professorship due to ill health in 1879. The pension was granted for six years and amounted to 3,000 Swiss francs per year.
That is about $52,750/annum in 2025. How is this not substantial?

>I would argue that people have a base, biological desire to "own" things

I don't think this principle is universal enough to warrant being called a base biological desire. Also the form of ownership has changed throughout history. For example in antiquity nobody except the king owned anything. Everything was handed down and further passed on. Humans having a biological desire to use resources is a more fundamental truth, ownership comes in second.

>Capitalism being more in line with our biological urges is one of the reasons why it works better on average than some other economic models.
But under capitalism the vast majority does not own the resources of personal survival. That's why they must wageslave for monopoly money

>Economics is a social science not a hard science

Law of supply and demand is just as "real" as the laws of thermodynamics. Just because you can see/experience one and "le science man" explaining it doesn't make it more real.
In a lab setting, you can "see" the laws of physics.
Also in a lab setting, although this time including humans, you can also "see" the laws of supply and demand setting prices.
I hate materialist thinking so much its unreal

Lmao. Yet it fails the predictive test often times when applied to real world. How can something be a fundamental law when its core (how we organise production) is itself subjected to actions. There is no law of supply and demand in the world of cavemen

Honestly, not too hot on Karl Marx, but there were some great artists, philosophers, poets or writers who were pretty much bums with wealthy patrons, but they made up for it with the great work they contributed to the world. Henry Miller had a wealthier benefactress and could be a mooch, Nietzsche likewise relied on financial support or a pension to live independently without a career apart from devotion to his work, as someone else mentioned.

It's called friendship, not too surprising that a 4chan autist wouldn't get it. It's not like Engels was some hard-working day laborer who broke his back trying to support his bum friend. He got his money mostly from his parent's company.
