I feel like western Essos (where all the nine major cities are) is too geographically large. Like, Pentos is a sizeable kingdom/republic. What's going on with all that land around it? Rich estates? Townships? You'd think it'd be a bit toned down in scale. George could have made more cities but nine is already quite the number. Idk, just always hit me weird.

The dyed beards shit is dumb too.

There is exactly 0 (zero) evidence that Maegor was actually as bad as the stories make him out to be. The Hightowers are the jews of Westeros and Maegor dismissed his barren bitch Hightower wife which made Lord Hightower seethe and cope so hard he got the maesters to smear Maegor, the citadel kikes hated Maegor because he stood up to them, Aenys was their obvious choice to back because he was a beta bitch with a shit constitution (and a bastard) so if anything the biggest mistake Maegor made was not burning Oldtown to the ground.

It's inspired by Mediterranean/Baltic sea merchant powers, like the Hanseatic League, Most Serene Republic of Venice and Republic of Genoa.
>economy based on trade tariffs collected from coastal trade
>ruled by oligarchic associations of richest merchants with figurehead rulers mediating between them
>control very little territory
>influence a shitton of coastal cities though
>minimal regular armies, massive mercenary forces bought with abovementioned tariffs instead
>said mercenaries make said coastal influences extremely fluid and impermanent

>What's going on with all that land around it?
A fuckton of microkingdoms and small towns which are treated as utterly irrelevant as long as they don't sit on Rhoyne or a Dragon road. If they do, the Free Cities clash those mercenary armies for dat tariff cash flow from controlling them.

"HIGHTOWERS could be here" he thought, "I've never been in this women before. There could be HIGHTOWERS anywhere." The sobbing of his new wife sounded good in the acoustics of the royal bedchamber of the Red Keep. "I HATE HIGHTOWERS" he thought. Bed squeaks "reverberated through the castle, making it pulsate even as the fertility brew circulated through his powerful thick veins and washed away his (merited) fear of disloyal vassals. "When you're a king, you can marry any woman you want" he said to himself, out loud.

When reading AGoT did people actually believe that Tyrion might have tried to murder Bran. In the show when Littlefinger reveals the knife my mind subconsciously never assumed for once that it might be Tyrion. Dinklage is just too charming for that. But the book Tyrion appears sus af and for a first time reader I think there is a mystery element to this arc. Did he actually try to assassinate Bran or did he not?

i don't think its the cowardice but rather the narcissism that would keep him from suicide.
he'd be screwed without daenerys but it would never drive him to suicide and the degree of his screwedness would vary depending on when she died
if it was before they left pentos then he'd try to reformulate some other plan. if it was with the dothraki they might just kill him after he inevitably freaks out for the first time, with no daenerys there to act as a deterrent. i doubt he'd try to leave them if they were too far from a free city, he knows he wouldn't survive in the wilderness.

I've got a question for you guys. I've heard the real reason that he can't finish the books is because that would require a true blue hero or for everyone to die and suffer, the former which goes against Martin's style of writing where everything is doom and gloom and the latter which would make the fan base violently angy.
Do you think there's any credence to this idea?

what are small houses, merchants and even smallfolk supposed to do if they need money? ask their liege? surely then we would've seen the consequences of such system

>After Ynys had come the Drinkwater twins, a pair of tawny young maidens who loved hawking, hunting, climbing rocks, and making Quentyn blush. One of them had given him his first kiss, though he never knew which one. As daughters of a landed knight, the twins were too lowborn to marry, but Cletus did not think that was any reason to stop kissing them. "After you're wed you can take one of them for a paramour. Or both, why not?" But Quentyn thought of several reasons why not, so he had done his best to avoid the twins thereafter, and there had been no second kiss.

>More recently, the youngest of Lord Yronwood's daughters had taken to following him about the castle. Gwyneth was but twelve, a small, scrawny girl whose dark eyes and brown hair set her apart in that house of blue-eyed blondes. She was clever, though, as quick with words as with her hands, and fond of telling Quentyn that he had to wait for her to flower, so she could marry him. - A Dance with Dragons - The Merchant's Man

>"Daenerys Targaryen is not the only woman in the world. Do you want to die a man-maid?"

>Quentyn did not want to die at all. I want to go back to Yronwood and kiss both of your sisters, marry Gwyneth Yronwood, watch her flower into beauty, have a child by her. - A Dance with Dragons - The Dragontamer

it shows Doran doesn't put his eggs into one basket, gives his character more agency
it gives insight into more dornish houses and some facets of their culture
it creates a conflict for Daenerys and a reminder that she should be going west and that she DOES actually have potential allies there, IF she doesn't fuck it up (which she did)

none of these are very important mind you and could have been left out completely, but they are points nontheless

yeah. I imagine it to be a slap in the face. She wasted so much time not going to Westeros, that Westeros has come for her. It's a reminder of her incompetence and could have served as the catalyst to finally have her abandon Essos and start sailing

That's what I was thinking to will happen when I first started reading the Quentyn chapters. I thought that was Gurm's intention too and it may have been at the start, but muh gardening ended it with Dany flying away back to the Dothraki and now we will never know what happens next

I had a dream that George released new ASOIAF content. It wasn't TWOW, it was a few Arya and Catelyn scenes that kind of bridged the gap to TWOW. Catelyn was getting involved in a plot to infiltrate the Twins by posing as a whore, I don't know how that would work with how she looks now.
He also said that TWOW was "89.99% done" and came to my house and befriended my dog (I don't have a dog).

This is an accurate statement, shame redditanon cannot see this. He was a man who above all else loved his family, he even loved his brother (a weakling bastard born to a whore mother) and allowed him to sit the throne. He drew the line at the prospect of letting a Velaryon (Oldtown plant) sully the throne.
Let us look at the Hands of Maegor's usurper Jaehaerys "Cunt Retard" I Targaryen
Rogar Baratheon
>Pussywhipped by a Velaryon hag
Daemon Velaryon
>Traitorous turncoat, possibly an oldtown asset
Myles Smallwood
>Loser lickspittle, literal who put in place to make his successor look better
Septon Barth
>Literal oldtown plant and sucked shit as hand
Ryam Redwyne
>Won tournament for Jaehaerys in OLDTOWN. How convenient.
Baelon Targaryen
>Nepobaby and possible incestuous faggot
Otto Hightower
>Jew

Yes he was bad, they are all bad, George does not write good characters. Alas it could be worse, he could be an Oldtown nigger.
>(Targs are canon extinct by the end of the series and thatโ€™s a good thing)
And it all starts with usurping Maegor. You literally can't prove Aenys did not want Maegor to succeed him, he knew that Velaryussy had crippled the blood of the dragon beyond repair.
>Maegors wives all had miscarriages

You are correct. What I meant was her incompetence in going west, which is supposed to be her actual goal. She's been doing side-quests all this time and the main quest is catching up on her in the form of Quentyn. It's a reminder that her actual goal is west and she is just wasting time, hence the incompetence. But maybe I should have used a different word, I'm ESL thoughbeit

9 more straightforward, small-scale, single-POV novellas would be much easier to write than 2 massive, hugely complicated, world-spanning novels with a dozen major POVs and almost as many secondary ones.
I still think that if he managed to finish ASOIAF it'd be very easy to finish D&E. Of course he isn't finishing ASOIAF, but if TWOW ever gets done we might get a couple more D&E stories plus Fire & Blood 2 which is apparently already half written.

Martin is terrible with geographical scale, specially when combined to chronological scale (something he doesn't fully grasp either).

Valyria is the worst offender: existed for thousands of years, with hundreds of dragons, yet they never went further than West Essos, despite Aegon conquering the entire Westeros with 3 dragons in a couple of years.
They live a few hours flight from Sothoryos, but only one dragonrider in millenia of history tried to travel there.
In a single cataclysm they literally all died and the other city states, who somehow barely inherited Valyrian culture despite being neighbors, were completely fine.

It's perhaps the most underachiever empire in all fiction, all of that because George can't into geography. It could be plausible if it was a region very very far away from Westeros, but it's not. Now we just wonder how a such a powerful empire managed to influence very little all the places where the action takes place

It shows that Doran is a fucking retard who is getting his family members killed pointlessly in convoluted schemes to hopefully get revenge later for his dead sister. Doran had a dead sister, now a dead brother and a dead son. Soon Doran will have a handful of dead nieces and a dead daughter to go with them.

Ellaria says the theme of the whole Dorne plot out loud in her speech when they're feasting upon receiving the Mountain's skull. The older Sand Snakes sneer at her and Doran says she's right but chooses to keep engaging with his retarded plots because of sunk cost. I would not be surprised at all if Ellaria kills Doran like she did in the show, but for completely different reasons, namely that his plotting is killing more Martells than the Lannisters ever could.

>"Sisters, truly, I know the poison Father used. If his spear so much as broke the Mountain's skin, Clegane is dead, I do not care how big he was. Doubt your little sister if you like, but never doubt our sire."
>Obara bristled. "I never did and never shall." She gave the skull a mocking kiss. "This is a start, I'll grant."
>"A start?" said Ellaria Sand, incredulous. "Gods forbid. I would it were a finish. Tywin Lannister is dead. So are Robert Baratheon, Amory Lorch, and now Gregor Clegane, all those who had a hand in murdering Elia and her children. Even Joffrey, who was not yet born when Elia died. I saw the boy perish with mine own eyes, clawing at his throat as he tried to draw a breath. Who else is there to kill? Do Myrcella and Tommen need to die so the shades of Rhaenys and Aegon can be at rest? Where does it end?"
>"It ends in blood, as it began," said Lady Nym. "It ends when Casterly Rock is cracked open, so the sun can shine on the maggots and the worms within. It ends with the utter ruin of Tywin Lannister and all his works."
>"The man died at the hand of his own son," Ellaria snapped back. "What more could you wish?"
>"I could wish that he died at my hand." Lady Nym settled in a chair, her long black braid falling across one shoulder to her lap. She had her father's widow's peak. Beneath it her eyes were large and lustrous. Her wine-red lips curled in a silken smile. "If he had, his dying would not have been so easy."
>"Ser Gregor does look lonely," said Tyene, in her sweet septa's voice. "He would like some company, I'm certain."
>Ellaria's cheeks were wet with tears, her dark eyes shining. Even weeping, she has a strength in her, the captain thought.
>"Oberyn wanted vengeance for Elia. Now the three of you want vengeance for him. I have four daughters, I remind you. Your sisters. My Elia is fourteen, almost a woman. Obella is twelve, on the brink of maidenhood. They worship you, as Dorea and Loreza worship them. If you should die, must El and Obella seek vengeance for you, then Dorea and Loree for them? Is that how it goes, round and round forever? I ask again, where does it end?" Ellaria Sand laid her hand on the Mountain's head. "I saw your father die. Here is his killer. Can I take a skull to bed with me, to give me comfort in the night? Will it make me laugh, write me songs, care for me when I am old and sick?"

Being as though Martin loved aping WotR then Plantagenet were around for 300 years, had a fairly comprehensive civil war at the end and then died put as Tudor, who also promptly then died out
But many families of Europe ruled for as long or longer, and died with a whimper, or a single civil war, maybe an international sucession crisis, but still only the singular one
It's not unbelievable to me that after 300 years a family who nearly no one liked is ousted and there is only a single rebellion that's only somewhat related afterwards tbqh

300 years is longer than the Carolingians, Romanovs, Bourbons in France, Julio-Claudians, Safavids, Ming, Qing, or any dynasty that ruled England. The only dynasties I can think of that have lasted longer than 300 years are the Rurikids, Habsburgs, Ottomans, Medici and the Japanese imperial family. It is incredibly rare for ruling dynasties for last that long.

It takes too much suspension of disbelief to imagine an empire that lasted for almost 5000 years doing nothing. Cultural zeitgeists change over time. The Roman Empire lasted just 500 years yet they changed their approach to politics and culture many times. Dynastic China exists for more 3000 years and look how much it conquered and changed.
It is hard to believe that Valyrians just spent 5000 years being hedonistic lazy retards with zero social and cultural evolution or even population growth (given that they barely settled outside their small peninsula)

And this without mentioning that Valyrians had an army of flying weapons of mass destruction. They just defeated Old Ghis millenia ago, bullied a couple of neighboring Rhoynar cities... and that's all?

I know it's fantasy and all, but for such a tight worldbuilding for Westeros, it's pretty disappointing handwaved the lore for Essos and Valyria is.

History is exaggerated. The Wall was built 2,500 years ago. Valyria bragging about its age is like Yi-Ti (the Yi-Tish are actually worse / more pathetic).

But George made it clear in a recent blog that the Valyrians were suspiciously held up in their golden peninsula. It was truly a paradisical landโ€”โ€˜the lands of the long summerโ€™ and all.

He even said dragons donโ€™t travel much. They stay in areas. But like, what was so damn great about the Valyrian peninsula?

In Essos:
>Victarion puts down the revolt in Meereen and sacrifices all of Hizdahr's and the besieger's leaders (including Hizdahr himself) as a blood sacrifice to make the dragonhorn his own.
>Barristan tries to stop him, but he is defeated and forced to blow the horn for Victarion
>Barristan dies and Viserion becomes enthralled, but not to Victarion, to Euron. The sacrifice did not work and the horn had not changed masters after all.
>Viserion flies away to Westeros, the first dragon to be seen atop it for centuries, named after Viserys the Exiled Prince.
>Dany returns to Meereen with a bunch of Dothraki, atop Drogon, like a Khal coming to conquer
>She battles Victarion and kills him.
>She burns Ben Plumm and intimidates the Second Sons to serve her
>Meereen is left as nothing but rubble and unburied dead, from the pale mare, the revolts, the sacrifice and lastly Dany and Vick's battle.
>She has had enough and starts westbound with Missandei, Tyrion, Penny, Jorah (in secret), Moqorro, the Unsullied, two dragons, the Dothraki, the rest of the remaining mercenary groups, including the Second Sons
>She is already half-mad (she already was in her last chapter, talking to rocks and grasses and laughing at pain.)
>She hears of fAegon's invasion and it pisses her off more
>As she appears near Volantis, the slaves there revolt and ask for her help overthrowing the masters
>She burns the city, killing masters alongside their slaves. Simultaneously punishing the slavers and freeing the slaves, by way of death. Then continues West as if nothing had happened, cutting the Essosi knot
>She becomes increasingly unhinged, so Daario nopes out and leaves, making her even more crazy
>The mercenary groups she has essentially enslaved with fear slowly slip away whenever they are able, which pisses her off even more and she brutally murders any she catches

In Westeros:
>fAegon's invasion is making great progress with all of the Stormlands coming under his control
>He marries Arianne, and thus Dorne becomes an active participant in the new war for the throne.
>Cersei is increasingly unstable, thinking Tyrion is inside the walls and had just killed Kevan the same way he killed Tywin
>She plots as the Tyrells rule through Tommen
>fAegon naively reaches out to Euron for an alliance against the crown. Joncon is livid.
>Euron agrees to it (he's bluffing)
>Joncon wants to move on King's Landing quickly in order to take the city and install fAegon as king before he is consumed by grayscale, but fAegon and others see it more strategic to take control of the Reach and cut off the Tyrell grain to the city first. Joncon reluctantly agrees to it.
>Joncon accidentally starts spreading grayscale amongst his men. With his body becoming more and more consumed, it becomes hard to avoid all contact
>Greyscale devastates the Golden Company, a twisted mockery of the skull hardened in molten gold that is their symbol, instead being petrified in stone.

>It takes too much suspension of disbelief to imagine an empire that lasted for almost 5000 years doing nothing.
The timeline is most likely fake or just wrong though. It's brought up more than once in AFFC/ADWD.

>"They are mentioned in the annals, though not as often as I would have thought. The annals I've found and looked at, that is. There's more I haven't found, I know. Some of the older books are falling to pieces. The pages crumble when I try and turn them. And the really old books . . . either they have crumbled all away or they are buried somewhere that I haven't looked yet or . . . well, it could be that there are no such books, and never were. The oldest histories we have were written after the Andals came to Westeros. The First Men only left us runes on rocks, so everything we think we know about the Age of Heroes and the Dawn Age and the Long Night comes from accounts set down by septons thousands of years later. There are archmaesters at the Citadel who question all of it. Those old histories are full of kings who reigned for hundreds of years, and knights riding around a thousand years before there were knights. You know the tales, Brandon the Builder, Symeon Star-Eyes, Night's King . . . we say that you're the nine hundred and ninety-eighth Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, but the oldest list I've found shows six hundred seventy-four commanders, which suggests that it was written during . . ."

>"And miss the first kingsmoot called in . . . how long has it been, Nuncle?"
>"Four thousand years, if Haereg can be believed. Half that, if you accept Maester Denestan's arguments in Questions.

>"Five hundred years before the Andals. A thousand, if the True History is to be believed. Only no one knows when the Andals crossed the narrow sea. The True History says four thousand years have passed since then, but some maesters claim that it was only two. Past a certain point, all the dates grow hazy and confused, and the clarity of history becomes the fog of legend."

>Euron prepares a grand sacrifice at Oldtown when Viserion appears in the sky
>Instead of using him to lay waste to the city, he adds him into the sacrifice alongside the Redwyne fleet that rolls up behind his
>The waters around his ships start boiling and turn red as they all become consumed
>Red waves of blood and oil cover the whole city, with only the Citadel remaining tall
>whomever the this oily bloodsea touches melts into a pile of unrecogniseable meat mush
>Euron surfaces from the sea, in the form of a tentacled monster the size of the citadel
>The deaths inside the city fuel his power, but it is becoming increasingly harder to control. As a result the bloodwaves subside.
>Sam sends Gilly and Mance's son out of the citadel to flee
>Sensing the King's blood in Mance's son, Euron moves towards them to consume him in an effort to regain his power
>Sam blows the horn of Joramun from the top of the tower to gain the his attention instead
>Euron destroys the citadel, killing everyone inside, before himself dissolving into a pile of oil and bile, covering the ruins of the citadel, turning its remains into oily black stone. The very same type that served as the foundation of the tower, creating a new layer.

>fAegon and co make steady progress in the conquest of the Reach despite their setback with the Grayscale
>He decides to follow Jon's plan and attack KL as Jon is now extremely adamant about it (He knows he doesn't have much left with the greyscale and wants to crown him asap. Losing troops to greyscale also urges him to be even more hasty)
>Once they set themselves up around the city, Cersei sees that defense is futile, so while everyone's preparing for the siege, she has wildfyre laid out all under the city which she plans to ignite as she leaves with Tommen to burn all her enemies (the people who have seen her walk of shame, the Tyrells, the Faith Militant, the High Sparrow and now fAegon also) on one huge pyre
>Loras has returned to the city some time prior, woundless. It was one of his underlings that wore his armour during the siege of Dragonstone, receiving the reported injuries, not him
>Margery is still imprisoned by the High Sparrow and Loras wants to go and free her, but he hears Cersei give out the order to ignite the wildfyre under the city to burn them all
>Knowing that his sister is still out there, he kills the alchemist running to fulfill the order and then moves towards Cersei sitting atop the iron throne with Tommen
>He wraps his hands around her neck and chokes the life from her. >The remaining Tyrells become prisoners and made to swear fealty to King Aegon VI
>News of the takeover are sent out across the realm, asking for fealty
>Joncon is made Lord Paramount of the Stormlands
>Joncon doesn't care, he just hastens fAegon's coronation

At the wall:
>Jon has been killed by the conspirators
>Melisandre tries to resurrect him, but it has no effect.
>The conspirators from among the NW with Selyse's entourage and the Wildlings with Jon's loyalists are at each others' throats
>They are overwhelmed and become confined into a small part of Castle Black where they make their last stand
>Stannis arrives, seeing that he has no hope of making a new army
>Melisandre offers him to wake dragons from stone in exchange for burning Shireen
>Seeing no other option, Stannis reluctantly agrees and burns her
>Shireen dies, and her soul is split from her body.
>Her soul breathes new life into Jon, who resurrects as a result
>Her body, ridden with greyscale starts transforming into a enormous stone dragon. Melisandre did wake a dragon from stone, but prophecies are tricky, like the valonquar's previously.
>This is possible from Shireen's Targaryen blood. It is implied here that the first dragons may have also been people, twisted by magic in some way.
>This dragon is not Shireen, not really. She was merely the vessel. Her being was her soul, which was sacrificed to resurrect Jon
>Jon during this time was warged inside Ghost, however this has not protected him from losing parts of himself
>The new Jon is silent, cold, calculating. Ghost lay lifeless beside him
>Inside his human body now exists two minds fused in one: one of Jon and one of Ghost. He was a man, then a wolf, then a man again, but inside the man was a wolf and the wolf was also the man.
>"Shireen" the stone dragon wakes in rage and lashes out at all around her. She takes to the sky right as the sound of a horn is heard resonating in the sky
>Suddenly the wall starts to collapse and Shireen is able to fly across it towards the North
>Stannis, seeing all that had transpired, full of guilt over his daughter takes off his crown and walks across the ruined wall and disappears in the haunted forest, unable to live with himself, hoping to die.
>The Wildlings worship Jon, thinking he's some sort of god

At Skagos:
>Davos arrives on shore and is met with armed wild men, riding atop wooly rhinos, speaking the old tongue
>He tells them he has come to take Rickon Stark home
>A wild man's eyes roll upwards for a moment, before returning to normal.
>He tells Davos: "Wilderwarg tell come" as he beckons him with his hand.
>Davos follows them to a wooden longhouse deep inside the island
>Inside he sees human meat drying above a central longfire while men and women alike on their knees pray towards a figure at the back end of the room
>As he moves closer he sees the figure move, seeing it now to be a giant direwolf snarling towards him with furs standing upwards like a great mane
>Before the wolf is a throne carved from wood and great tusks
>In it sits a boy with auburn hair, as he gnaws on what appears to be the bone of an arm
>The boy looks expectantly, so Davos again says he has come to take Rickon Stark home
>The boy says he is Rickon, but he is already at home. His old home was destroyed and his family is dead, so now he has a new home and a new family
>Davos tells him he still has a living brother, Jon Snow
>He tells Rickon that King Stannis wishes to avenge his family and that they need his help, they need him to be a ruler like his father Ned was

> "And you?"

No, they don't "have to", they're just talentless hacks wholly unsuited for the task.

People want to believe Hollywood is some kinda meritocracy where actually talented artists are promoted and given the best projects but that simply isn't the case.
