For example, if a critic says something is maudlin or braindead, and you find it compelling, aren't either a suggestion that you're deficient in some way: either that you're emotionally soft and manipulable or lack the intelligence to judge it properly? Even if you dress the judgment up in subtler or ostensibly friendly words, as with banter, isn't it reasonable to wonder if the same belief motivates it? The judgments might even be accurate and worth causing a change in someone if they're true, but people often don't try to level their experiences and investigate another perspective to see why the other has the opinion they do and whether their judgment of it is true in the clearest sense. In the best-case scenario it feels more like a game of chess than heart-to-heart communication, and in the worst it isn't even communication. Of course not all communication should be this serious (it would be exhausting), but I always wonder if the first appearance of any communication hides something else.

I have trouble discerning where friendly banter ends, I remember what people say, and I am always on the alert for subtle sleights. Maybe the problem I detect is no larger than my own distrust of other people (hence why I'm here).

For what it's worth I ultimately failed to really communicate between me and the person I mentioned, though I did try on different occasions. It depends partly how you dunked, but the willingness to reciprocate and have fun is telling that your heart was in the right place, I think.
