English History
What's a good intro into English history? Its impact on others through crusades, colonisation and world wars I know from elsewhere, but I don't have much of a picture of the country's own workings and development.

That does sound like it'll give a more legitimate edge to my otherwise pophis-riddled curriculum.

It's an old book and somewhat a mythic but
Cambria triumphans: britain in her perfect lustre by enderbie (1670) is something worth perusing if you're into that sort of thing.

Yale University English Kings series
Biography + sort of survey on the times of the man on the cover. Quality varies but they are all good academic works, some like Henry III and Henry the Young King are everything you could ever want out of a biography, some like on Athelstan are a bit lacking, but it's mostly the nature of the sources.
Penguin's Magna Carta with commentary by David Carpenter is a really good look into England during the reign of John.
