If you believe that a country who can't even destroy a small city in a very close country can destroy one of the biggest and richest countries in history that is also all the way around the globe, then you are the delusional one.

Yes, Catch-22 is at least a dozen times better than Švejk. It handily surpasses most non-war books as well.

Catch-22 is about working in an office in the 1950s. Now Something Happened is a war book.

If I start kicking and punching a 4 years old kid, is it a fight or a beating? Don't act like if your country is at war. You don't know what war is. Your empirical first world ultrarich country is simply abusing and beating a third world country that can't even compete with other third world countries.

lol this board has really gone to shit, people in this thred are recommending shit like storm and steel or caesar as if their role in war would be high ranking officer inventing strategies and fighting heroically and not one of the fruitflies dying 30 seconds after those heroes commence their heroism and send others to senselless death. Oh do not worry, I am sure they will put you in unmarked grave and the guy will receive a medal for his glorious tactical retreat.

Schweik is the only book relevant for true experience of war. If you ever for some reason get drafted follow Schweik's example if you want to survive. In war only the "heroes" and mad fools survive and what's more war rewards them for it, just like real life.

I also love Schweik (the book) for it's intertextual level, it's Divine Comedy but translated onto WW1 and Austria-Hungary (Hell), where service in army is purgatory. Schweik being both Dante and Vergilius - both unknowing fool and experienced veteran. If there ever was a book made for lit it is Schweik, bcos you need to start with the greeks to understand it beyond "story about funny soldier".

Schweik and Hašek are just as misunderstood as Kafka and his works, ironically the two authors were both good friends with Max Brod - who had his hands in publishing both works. he was the first person to translate and publish Schweik in german, which lead to popularity of the book, as post-ww1 czech society with their new-found patriotism and legionary heroes at first hated the book and considered it to be traitorous - ironically behaving just like one of the non-Schweik characters in the books.

off the top of my head:
>chickenhawk by robert mason - its about a huey helicopter pilot who served in vietnam, lots of action but also living in jungle conditions, sleeping with hookers etc
>black hawk down by mark bowden - the failed 1993 mission to kill a somali clan leader in mogadishu, foreshadows the futility and senselessness of much of gwot, nearly 20 elite us soldiers get killed in one day
>all quiet on the western front by erich maria remarque - the anti-junger, a book about the monotony and endless danger of ww1 trench warfare, and decidedly anti war
>campaigns of alexander by arrian - a classic account of alexanders campaigns, after subduing greece he makes his way eastwards, conquering everything he comes across, eventually going mad and dying of fever

If you like sci fi, I would recommend whole heartedly the forever war, I’m surprised it was not mentioned here
Catch 22 I enjoyed reading so much, thought I’m going to get disappointed so I always postponed starting it, but as soon as I was done I regretted not reading it way earlier in life. Try couple of chapters, see if the style resonates with you
I would also suggest at any point to read autobiographies of people who fought in wars, it’s probably not as good as war fiction, and since for example both books I recommend were written by veterans of wars it might be a bit redundant, but war seems such unbelievable string of events that even the realism of an autobiography or memoir can feel like a work of fiction

Who? Who is at war? With whom? You mean the recent Iran shit? They've been internationally humiliated, the ceasefire is holding. There is no war for anyone other than snow niggers, towelheads and kikes.

Nothing.

It's Rudolf Hrušinský, he was one of the best czech actors. Cremator is one of his best roles, but the best is Schweik. He even gained all that weight for the role and never lost it, before Schweik he used to be thin. If you liked him in Cremator you may enjoy him in the movie version of Good Soldier Schweik (1957), where he does not play a madman but a fool/genius. The movies are considered classic in Czechia.

What's interesting is that both Cremator and Good Soldier Schweik are about how person gets mentally twisted by his surroundings - Koprfkingl in Cremator gets twisted by Nazi ideology, Schweik by life in Austria-Hungary.

Of course funnily enough Schweik is never described as being fat in the book itself, but the book has became synonymous with illustrations by Josef Lada (see the book cover in OP) and Lada drew him fat.

i was gonna say North by Celine but
fact that no one has mentioned Gravity's Rainbow makes me wonder why.
The book made me a real fan of vengeance waffel. The stuff that made the bong rats tremble religiously during wwII is still a nightmare fuel for a lot of (((nations))), and no one has readymade solution. It comes down like immutable justice of god.
