>>24486417 (OP)lol this board has really gone to shit, people in this thred are recommending shit like storm and steel or caesar as if their role in war would be high ranking officer inventing strategies and fighting heroically and not one of the fruitflies dying 30 seconds after those heroes commence their heroism and send others to senselless death. Oh do not worry, I am sure they will put you in unmarked grave and the guy will receive a medal for his glorious tactical retreat.
Schweik is the only book relevant for true experience of war. If you ever for some reason get drafted follow Schweik's example if you want to survive. In war only the "heroes" and mad fools survive and what's more war rewards them for it, just like real life.
I also love Schweik (the book) for it's intertextual level, it's Divine Comedy but translated onto WW1 and Austria-Hungary (Hell), where service in army is purgatory. Schweik being both Dante and Vergilius - both unknowing fool and experienced veteran. If there ever was a book made for lit it is Schweik, bcos you need to start with the greeks to understand it beyond "story about funny soldier".
Schweik and Hašek are just as misunderstood as Kafka and his works, ironically the two authors were both good friends with Max Brod - who had his hands in publishing both works. he was the first person to translate and publish Schweik in german, which lead to popularity of the book, as post-ww1 czech society with their new-found patriotism and legionary heroes at first hated the book and considered it to be traitorous - ironically behaving just like one of the non-Schweik characters in the books.
