Anons, I picked up this book to read today, but I was taken back by all the usual suspect markers all around the cover. Before loosing my time I wish to know, is it worth to read?

I’ve read a lot of Cohen
Wouldn't recommend him but he’s very talented, Bloom thought he was great
But he’s a nihilistic egoist (does his work enlighten, or does it just display virtuosity? — and if youre looking for virtuosity read Book Of Numbers)
He came from a devout Zionist family (i remember reading his uncle advice him as a young journalist, “more simple declarative sentences supportive of Israel”) but being an accomplished man of letters who fornicates and likes P Roth and is attracted to socialism he feels ambivalent
I really don’t care about liberal minded Jews ambivalency about Israel, and expressing this ambivelncy through sophisticated art , snore!

The best part of the book is the Afterword where he shares a letter sent to him by an unnamed female relative of Harold Bloom

Is he a talented writer? Yeah, he’s not bad. Is he worth reading at all? Not even a little bit. You sound ignorant and this kind of braindead anti-semitism isn't helpful. Bloom promoted Freud and Kafka but it wasn't like we was subservient to Jewish writers or give them special treatment, besides personal interest. He didn't like Saul Bellow for example. Cohen is a real artist with taste and a lot better than Franzen or Wallace.
And Cohen is better read than anyone on this board. Of course he's a slave to liberal opinion and so his work suffers from that

Good point. My problem is this kind of thing isn't taking things seriously (Weininger actually said that was the sin of Judaism: to not take things seriously, to smile at God.) He wants it both ways. Jewish family sentimentalism and humanist morality. It's dishonest. (But this dishonesty comes down to the hoax at the end of the day.) I like Joshua a lot though. Greatness is a difficult path and I don't expect people to break out of their "race"/upbringing

Book of Numbers is a great attempt at an "Internet Novel". There's no modern novel that can compare (on the other hand who else can get published? Jews actually have a literary culture so talents can break through). And the idea of avoiding Jewish stuff or not taking interest in it is unreasonable. It's like avoiding the internet or blocking out all media. To understand modernity you need to understand Judaism: with sympathy but also critically
