It's easy to see why Tolkien didn't like it. Herbert didn't spend decades fleshing out the manuscript and lore like he did. It's a rush job in comparison, yet people treat it like sci-fi's answer to LotR

It's way more effective in terms of world building because it does more with less. It doesn't need a Klingon to Elven dictionary for autistic nerds for the reader to feel authentic. Also the setting is more original, not just recycled fairy tales in a melting pot.

Dune (the first one) and LOTR both suck. The sequels of Dune however far surpass the original book, and anything Tolkien ever wrote.
